Box Score.
DURHAM, N.C. (EMUEagles.com)—The Eastern Michigan University baseball team broke away from North Carolina Central University with pairs of runs in the fourth and sixth innings to claim an 8-4 victory Wednesday, Feb. 29. Sam Ott blasted what proved to be the game-winning home run in the fourth inning on a day when he went 2-for-2 with three walks and a trio of runs scored.
The Eagles (2-5) and NCC (1-7) each scored a pair of runs in the first inning and another in the second before EMU went ahead, 4-3, in the third. The Green and White added four more insurance tallies and held its opponent hitless through the final seven innings of the game.
Eastern Michigan used six pitchers in the contest, four of which did not allow a run. Collectively the EMU pitching staff struck out eight batters including starter Paul Schaak and relievers Jeffrey Rousseau (1-0) and Taylor Dimmerling, who recorded two punch outs apiece.
Schaak lasted four innings, allowing three earned runs and five hits. Since Schaak did not pitch through the fifth inning, the win was instead credited to Rousseau, who tossed one inning in relief.
A decidedly different looking EMU starting lineup featured John Rubino, who went 2-for-6 with a double and a run scored batting in the leadoff spot. Designated hitter Austin Williams had a solid 2-for-4 afternoon with a pair of RBI and run scored, and catcher Adam Dennison went 2-for-5. Ott, who made his first start of the year in centerfield, was a triple shy of the cycle.
Lee Longo also hit a solo jack for the Eagles to go along with two RBI and two runs scored. He along with Ott notched a hit for the seventh straight game.
Eastern Michigan committed three errors in the contest, but none of those miscues resulted in additional runs against.
The same could not be said for NCC, whose four errors allowed two additional EMU runs to cross home plate. The NCC staff did not make its job any easier by issuing six walks on the evening. Jasper Jones (0-1) recorded the loss for the home Eagles, giving up six runs (five earned) over four innings.
NC Central managed just five hits in the contest and was paced by Luis Diaz, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a home run.
Longo put the Eagles on the board in the first inning with a sacrifice fly. Williams then singled up the middle and plated Ott to give EMU the 2-0 advantage.
Central answered right back in the bottom half of the inning when Diaz sent a shot over the right field wall for a two-run homer.
Simpson led off the second frame with a walk and eventually came around to score on an RBI groundout by shortstop Kyle Klein. NCC again tied the contest at three-all in its next at-bat when Dyla Drayton scored after leading off with a triple. Nate Smith's single in the same inning would prove to be the final hit of the game for the home team.
Eastern Michigan pulled ahead for good, 4-3, in the third inning, when Miles Sorise worked a bases-loaded walk to earn his first RBI of the season. Ott and Longo launched back-to-back solo homers in the fourth to widen that margin to 6-3.
Ott and Longo also accounted for Eastern Michigan's final two runs of the game in the sixth inning.
The Eagles will enjoy a day off to begin the month of March before starting a four-game set Friday-Sunday, March 2-4. EMU will play a pair of games against both Marshall University and Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C.
