Eagles Drop Two in Final Day of UCF Invite

2/26/2012 4:51:00 PM | Softball

EMU loses two one-run games to FGCU and UCF this afternoon

Box Scores: Game One. Game Two.

ORLANDO, Fla. (EMUEagles.com)
— The Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped a pair of closely contested games today, Feb. 26, in the final day of action at the Courtyard by Marriott University of Central Florida Invitational in Orlando, Fla.

EMU, now 2-4 on the season, fell to Florida Gulf Coast, 1-0, before suffering a 4-3 loss to UCF in the final contest of the day.

The Eagles came out on the losing end of a pitcher's duel in the first game of the afternoon, with both teams connecting on just two hits apiece in Florida Gulf Coast's 1-0 win over the Eagles.

Jessica Richards and Allison Scherer accounted for the Eagles two hits in the game, but they proved to be too few and far between an EMU offense that failed to tally any runs against the FCGU pitching staff.

Despite a solid 4.1 innings the circle, Jenna Ignowski took the loss this afternoon, falling to 2-1 on the year. The junior held her opponents to just one run on two hits while striking out four. She would be relieved by Lindsay Rich who would close out the final two innings of play. The freshman shut out FGCU while striking out two and holding her opponents hitless while on the mound.

A one-run fifth inning would be enough to seal the win for EMU's opponent. FGCU capitalized on a one-out walk, driving the run in on a triple to right-center field. EMU's offense failed to answer in the final two innings as FGCU secured the 1-0 win.

In the Green and White's 4-3 setback to the Knights, EMU threatened to make a comeback in its final offensive stand. Facing a 4-2 deficit and no outs, freshman Amanda Herron picked an opportune moment to connect on her first career hit with a double down the left-field line. Lindsay Smith followed suit with a double of her own to left-center field, driving in Herron for the score and push the Eagles to within one.

With runners at second and third and the game on the line, Kaylee Tolliver checked into the contest in hopes of keeping the Eagles alive. Tolliver fell into a 1-2 count but continued to battle, fouling off three straight pitches, however UCF's Mackenzie Audas would come out on top with a strikeout and end the game.

Lauren Wells drops to 0-3 on the year with the loss. She threw 4.2 innings, giving up four runs on nine hits while striking out four.

Rich entered the contest in relief, throwing 1.1 innings and striking out two.

Offensively, the Eagles scattered five hits with Richards, Sarah Gerber, Herron, Wells and Smith each registering one apiece.

Richards also stole three bases against the Knights. Her efforts on the basepaths not only tie the second most by an EMU softball player in program history, but they give her 51 in her career and move her into fourth all-time in the EMU career record books.

The Eagles will seek redemption in its one-run loss to the Knights as they will face UCF tomorrow, Feb. 27. in a single game scheduled for 5 p.m. at the UCF Softball Complex.
