TULSA, Okla. (EMUEagles.com)— The Eastern Michigan University baseball team came out on the wrong end of a 14-1 score against Oral Roberts University Sunday afternoon, Feb. 26. The Eagles surrendered 10-or-more runs for the fourth time in five games and fell to 1-4 on the young season.
Oral Roberts (2-5) tallied 14 hits- seven of which were extra base knocks- and scored in every inning but the first and put the game out of reach with a five-run seventh inning. Eastern Michigan scored its lone run of the game in the eighth inning on a Tucker Rubino single which plated Jamie Simpson.
Brian Valente (0-1) took the loss for the Eagles, pitching one and two-thirds innings and giving up two runs (one earned) while walking four ORU batters. EMU used a total of five pitchers Sunday and each was charged with at least one earned run.
The Eagles managed just six hits, with Rubino going 1-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Matt Hitt notched his first knock of the 2012 campaign, going 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.
For the Golden Eagles, Dan Martony (1-0) picked up the win after starter Alex Gonzalez left the game following the second inning due to an injury. Martony tossed four innings and was one-of-six ORU pitchers to appear in the game.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the second inning, when ORU loaded the bases on a single and a pair of EMU errors. Valente then issued back-to-back walks to give the Golden Eagles an early 2-0 lead.
ORU continued to accumulate runs to take a 7-0 advantage into the seventh inning, when the home team struck for five runs to increase its lead to 12-0.
Eastern Michigan used a pair of walks and a hit batsman to load the bases with one out in the eighth inning. Rubino's RBI single gave the Eagles their only run of the contest.
