EMU drops a 5-1 decision to FGCU before bouncing back to a 7-1 win over Seton Hall

Box scores: Game 1. Game. 2.

ORLANDO, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University softball team split a pair of games in the first day of the Courtyard by Marriot University of Central Florida Invitational in Orlando, Florida.

The Green and White suffered a 5-1 setback in the afternoons opening tilt to Florida Gulf Coast (5-6) but later bounced back in a 7-1 win over Seton Hall (1-3).

A quiet offense hindered the Eagles efforts in the 5-1 setback, tallying just three hits against FGCU.

EMU's offense manufactured its lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning, initiated by a Jessica Richards double to left field. With two outs and Richards still stranded at second base, Sarah Gerber stepped to the plate and drove her teammate home on a single that found its way through the left side of the infield.

Gerber also belted a double in the opening frame to lead the Green and White with a perfect 2-for-2 performance at the plate.

Lauren Wells (0-1) was handed the loss after giving up four earned runs in four innings of work. The lefty faced 21 batters, striking out four while giving up four FGCU hits.

Freshman Lindsay Rich was effective in her collegiate debut and provided solid innings in relief. The rookie pitched three shut out innings and fanned six while holding the FGCU offense to just two hits.

In EMU's 7-1 victory over the Pirates, the Eagles cranked out 15 hits with five members having multi-hit performances at the plate.

EMU jumped ahead early thanks to a three-run first inning. Richards opened up the game with an infield single and was moved to second on a hit from Katy Blaharski. Both advanced 60 feet on a double steal to eventually set up a bases loaded situation for Kaylee Tolliver. The senior was awarded first base on a catcher's interference call, giving the Green and White its first run of the ball game. Courtney Nicholson then stepped into the batter's box and drove a two-run shot up the middle to push the Eagles ahead, 3-0.

EMU would add on another four runs in the third. Back-to-back singles by McKenna Russ and Gerber put runners at first and second. Tolliver then connected on a one-out single to load the bases, leaving Nicholson with the opportunity to increase EMU's lead. The junior came through with a 2-RBI shot to opposite field, putting the Eagles ahead, 6-0.  EMU would chip in another run that inning as it cruised to a 7-1 victory.

Blaharksi led the Eagles with a career-high, four-hit effort in the contest. The junior also scored a run while driving in a run for the Eagles, while Nicholson knocked in a career-high four RBI this afternoon.

Jenna Ignowski provided the EMU staff with 6.1 well-pitched innings in the circle. The Niles, Mich. native kept the Pirates scoreless while on the mound, striking out seven while holding her opponents to just one hit on the day.

The Eagles will continue action in the UCF Invitational tomorrow with games against Jacksonville and UCF. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.
