Box Score.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (EMUEagles.com)— John Rubino and Adam Dennison recorded their first-career hits, but the Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a 10-2 decision to the University of Kentucky Saturday, Feb. 18, at Harley Park. The Eagles mounted several quality scoring threats, but could not get on the scoreboard until the ninth inning.
The Eagles (0-2) surrendered 10-or-more runs for a second consecutive game and have been outscored, 22-3, so far this weekend. The Wildcats (2-0) conversely scored 10 runs for a second straight time.
Eight different Eagles notched a hit on the afternoon including Lee Longo, who had another solid game going 1-for-3 with a walk. Brent Ohrman and Tucker Rubino each tallied an RBI and a base hit.
John Rubino's first hit in an EMU uniform came in the fifth inning on a single down the left field line. The freshman also earned his first collegiate start Saturday, playing second base and hitting ninth for Head Coach Jay Alexander.
Dennison also made his first appearance in a starting role behind the plate, tallying a base hit and a run in the Eagles' two-run ninth inning.
On the mound, Joe Battistelli (0-1; 7.94 ERA) took the loss for the Eagles, giving up five runs and 10 hits over five and two-thirds innings.
For the Wildcats, Jerad Grundy (1-0; 0.00 ERA) picked up the win after pitching five and two-thirds innings and striking out four EMU batters.
A.J. Reed and Matt Reida paced Kentucky offensively as each posted a 2-for-4 performance with three RBI apiece.
A pair of walks and a Lee Longo double loaded the bases for Eastern Michigan with two outs in the first inning, but Daniel Russell grounded out to second base and the game remained scoreless.
The Wildcats put three runs on the board with one in the second and a pair in the third. Luke Maile led off the second inning with a home run and added his second RBI of the afternoon when he plated J.T. Riddle in the third.
Kentucky increased its lead to 5-0 in the sixth inning. In the bottom half of that frame, the Eagles put two runners on base with two outs when Sam Ott followed a Longo walk with a single through the right side. The scoring threat did not result in any runs and the Eagles remained down by five.
In the seventh inning, Kentucky broke the game open with five additional runs to make it a 10-0 contest. The Wildcats sent eight batters to the plate in the inning.
The Green and White scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, as Ohrman and Rubino each tallied their first RBI of the season.
Eastern Michigan will play the final game of the weekend Sunday, Feb. 19, when it faces the University of Dayton at 11 a.m.
