EMU commits four errors in 12-1 loss
Box Score.
SPARTANBURG, S.C.— Offensive and defensive struggles alike sent the Eastern Michigan University baseball team to a 12-1 opening day setback Friday afternoon, Feb. 17, in game one of the USC Upstate Tournament against host USC Upstate. The Eagles were unable to capitalize on five walks while committing four throwing errors to begin the 2012 slate.
The Eagles (0-1) dug themselves into an 8-0 hole after five innings and were unable to mount a comeback against the Spartans (1-0), whose pitching staff gave up just seven hits. Steve Weber (0-1; 2.25 ERA) started on the mound for the Eagles, pitching four innings while surrendering three runs (one earned) in a losing effort.
Designated hitter Lee Longo was the bright spot in the EMU offense Friday, going 3-for-4 with three singles. He also scored the Eagles' lone run in the eighth inning on an RBI single from Dae Bowden.
On the mound, Paul Schaak and Ben Dartnell each made their EMU debuts. Schaak tossed one and two-thirds innings, striking out two and allowing one earned run. Dartnell struck out a pair of batters as well in one inning of work.
David Roseboom (1-0; 0.00 ERA) recorded the win for the Spartans, pitching six innings and striking out four batters. A trio of Upstate hitters posted three-hit games, with Brody Greer leading the way at 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
The Spartans started off the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when leadoff hitter Jordan Stampler scored on a muffed throw by second baseman Austin Williams.
Weber then worked his way out of a one-out, bases-loaded situation in the second by inducing a double play off the bat of Stampler.
In the fourth inning, Ben Magsig led off with a single, but was ultimately caught in a rundown between first and second base. Sam Ott also recorded his first hit of the season in the fourth, but failed to score.
Upstate made it a 3-0 game in the bottom of the fourth as Dillon Way drove in Greer and eventually came around to score on a Tucker Rubino throwing error.
Eastern Michigan's defensive woes continued into the fifth inning, when reliever Jordan Glover recorded the third and fourth errors of the afternoon. The inning ended with five Spartans runs to grow the EMU deficit to 8-0. Upstate added a four-spot in the sixth to make it a 12-0 contest.
Dae Bowden recorded his second-career RBI in the eighth inning and put EMU on the scoreboard.
The Eagles will play the middle game of the opening weekend tournament Saturday, Feb. 18, at 11 a.m. versus the University of Kentucky.
