Eagles Crowned Champions of 2011 IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational

After going 3-0 in the 2011 IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational, the Eagles were named tournament champions

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team won their sixth straight match on Sunday, Sept. 4, when they took down the Jaguars of IUPUI in four sets (25-12, 25-22, 20-25, 25-18). The Eagles have only lost two sets in their last six matches taking 17-of-19 sets. With the win, Eastern went 3-0 in the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational, which was the best record of the competing teams, crowning the Green and White champions of the tournament.

EMU improved their record to 6-1 on the season with their win over IUPUI. The Jaguars fell to 2-6 after the loss.

Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) set the tone of the Eagles with a double-double, 23 kills and 21 digs. She was able to pick up the 23 kills while keeping a .362 attack percentage (23-2-58). Iaquaniello was also named the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational Most Valuable Player. Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) had 46 assists for EMU, while Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) was able to rack up 11 kills in the Eagle victory. Freshman, Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) picked up a career high seven kills, and Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) led the Eagle defense with five total blocks in the win. Roback and Baker's efforts over the weekend did not go unnoticed as each of them were named to the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational All-Tournament team. Joining them were Shari Bernhardt and Bethany Fogler of IUPUI, Kaley Melville from Stetson and Cameron Yoho of Marshall.

The Green and White lead off the match up with a quick 25-12 win in the opening frame. Multiple Eagles chipped in offensively as Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville), Iaquaniello, Baker, and Crawshaw each had four kills in the first set. Mason was able to tally 17 assists in the opening frame, while EMU had a .459 attack percentage to open up the match (19-2-37).

The Eagles kept rolling in the second set, taking it 25-22. Iaquaniello added four more kills, while Baker, Mason and Roback each had two of their own. Despite having just a .077 attack percentage (14-10-52), the Eagles were able to take a two-set lead.

The Jaguars were able to fight back in the third set, riding a .571 attack percentage (5-1-7) of Kortni Wright. They took the third set, 25-20, despite six kills from Iaquaniello.

The Green and White took the final frame with relative ease, 25-18. Led by Iaquaniello's nine kills and a .643 attack percentage (9-0-14), the Eagles took their sixth straight match, and were crowned champions of the 2011 IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational.

Eastern continues their 2011 campaign on Tuesday, Sept. 6, when they travel to Youngstown, Ohio to take on the Penguins of Youngstown State at 7 p.m. The Eagles try to continue their winnings streak when they take on the 0-7 Penguins at the Beeghly Center on the Youngstown State campus.
