Eagles Top Bulldogs in Five Set Thriller

Eastern took down Butler 3-2 in the Shamrock Invitational

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team was able to tame the Bulldogs of Butler University on Saturday afternoon and won 3-2 in their second match at the Shamrock Invitational. The Eagles took the opening frame 25-23, but dropped the next two by scores of 17-25 and 11-25. The Green and White return-fired with a 25-23 win in the fourth frame, forcing the match to a fifth set. The Eagles were able to take the final set by a score of 17-15 to pick up their first victory of the young 2011 campaign.

Eastern Michigan moved to 1-1 on the season, while the Bulldogs fell to 0-2 after falling in the final set of action.

Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) led the Eagles with a double-double including 23 kills and 17 digs. Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) set-up the offense nicely all match and totaled a team high 50 assists. Defensively the Eagles had five athletes with double-digit digs, including Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central) who led EMU with 24. Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) and Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) helped out at the net adding 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) had three service aces and four total blocks in the Eagles winning effort. Baker also added seven kills for EMU.

Iaquaniello led EMU in the first set with seven kills and a .417 attack percentage. Mason was able to serve up 12 assists in the opening frame, helping the Eagles to an early one-set lead.

Iaquaniello continued her strong net play by banging home another six kills in the second set, while Mason added 11 assists despite the Bulldogs tying the score at one-set a piece.

The third set was a struggle for the Eagles as they dropped it 11-25. Mason added seven assists to her total, as well as, a kill in the third set. Maureen Bamiro hurt the Eagles at the net, slamming home six kills in the third set. Maggie Harbison helped out defensively with four blocks in the third frame.

The Eagles rebounded in the fourth set taking it 25-23. Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) came up big in the fourth frame with four kills and a block for the final point of the set. Mason had a block and added 10 assists in the fourth set.

Iaquaniello came up big in the final set picking up six kills while Mason added 11 to her set total in the final frame. The Eagles took the final set 17-15 t pick up their first win of the season.

The Eagles finish out their schedule at the Shamrock Invitational on Sunday when they square off with the Vandals of Idaho (1-0). The match is set for 11 a.m. at the Joyce Center in South Bend, Ind.
