CHICAGO, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) — The Michigan-Eastern Michigan football game will kick off at noon Saturday, Sept. 17, the Big Ten Conference announced today, June 7. The contest at Michigan Stadium will be televised by the Big Ten Network.
The Wolverines and Eagles are meeting for the 10th time and U-M holds an 9-0 advantage in the series. The series started in 1896 with Michigan recording an 18-0 shutout. The last time the two squads met was Sept. 19, 2009, when Michigan turned in a 45-17 victory over EMU.
EMU's football coaching staff has a strong connection with the University of Michigan. Third-year Head Coach Ron English was on the Wolverines' coaching staff for five seasons (2003-07). EMU assistant coaches Kurt Anderson, Tom Burpee and Steve Morrison were also players, coaches or both at U-M.
Anderson, a 2001 U-M graduate, earned two letters for the Wolverines from 2000-01 and was a member of their coaching staff as a graduate assistant from 2006-07. Burpee completed his undergraduate degree at Michigan in 2005 and was both a student assistant and graduate assistant from 2002-07. Morrison earned four varsity letters from 1990-1994 as a linebacker at U-M, before serving as a graduate assistant coach from 2002-04.
Game times for the remainder of the 2011 EMU football schedule will be released in the coming weeks by the Mid-American Conference office.
The 2011 season will be the 120th for the EMU football team. The first year of intercollegiate football in Ypsilanti was 1891 when the team posted an 0-2 record. EMU has fielded a team every year since 1891 with one exception, when the 1944 season was canceled because of World War II.
EMU kicks off the 2011 football season against Howard University Saturday, Sept. 3, at Rynearson Stadium. Football season tickets are on sale now for as low as $48, and can be purchased by calling the EMU Ticket Office at 734.487.2282.
