YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)
— With today's doubleheader sweep over the Buffalo Bulls, the Eastern Michigan University softball team secured a spot at the 2011 Mid-American Conference Tournament for the first time since the 2007 season.

The Eagles took game one in a convincing 12-0 win and secured the second-game with a 2-1 victory. The wins push the Green and White's record to 25-15 (11-7 MAC), while Buffalo falls to 11-34 (6-12 MAC) on the season.

EMU hammered out 12 hits with eight for extra-bases against the Buffalo pitching staff in game one.

The Eagles' seven doubles in the contest set a new team record for doubles in a single game, while the eight extra-base knocks ties the top mark in program history and has not been achieved since the 2004 season.

Jenna Ignowski (Niles, Mich.-Niles)
earned her sixth complete game shutout on the season after throwing five scoreless innings in the circle. The sophomore struck out four and held the Bulls to just three hits in the contest.

All but one EMU hitter in the lineup registered hits in the game, with four posting multi-hit days at the plate.

Stacie Skodinski (South Bend, Ind.-Washington)
led with a balanced attack with two hits in four at bats while driving in four runs for the Eagles. Her four RBI ties a career high and marks just the second time she has posted that statistic in her career.

Junior McKenna Russ (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover) went 2-for-3 with two doubles, while Jessica Richards (Canton, Ohio-Jackson), Sarah Gerber (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover), and Lauren Delapaz (Plymouth, Ohio-Canton) also posted multiple hits in game one.

The Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead on a five hit second inning. Impressively enough, each hit recorded in that frame were doubles with three consecutive to start the inning.

Gerber, Russ, and Kayla Kostich (Taylor, Mich.-Cabrini) drove back-to-back-to-back doubles to put the home team up one. One out later, Delapaz connected on the Eagles fourth double of the inning to plate two more for the Green and White. Skodinski's two-out, two-run double to left center field concluded
EMU's scoring in the second, giving the Eagles a 5-0 advantage.

The Eagles' offense continued to wreak havoc on the UB pitching staff, unleashing seven hits in the fourth to take a 12-0 lead over the Bulls.

Skodinski plated her third and fourth RBI of the game with a one-out single to right. After stealing her 14th base of the season, Skodinski was knocked in on a Nellie Coquillard (Niles, Mich.-Niles) double that found the left field gap to give the Eagles a nine run advantage.

With a runner standing at second, Gerber drilled her fifth long ball of the season beyond the right field fence to swell the Green and White's lead to 11.

An RBI single from Lindsay Smith (Seville, Ohio-Cloverleaf) brought in the final run of the ball game with the Eagles taking game one in dominating fashion.

Unlike the opening contest, game two showcased a true pitchers dual between Lauren Wells (Lowell, Ind.-Lowell) and UB's Holly Johnson (6-15).

Wells (8-4) came out on top, earning her eighth win of the season with seven strikeouts in seven innings of work. The lefty did not give up an earned run and held the Bulls to five hits in the 2-1 victory.

Richards extended her hit streak to eight games with a flawless 3-for-3 day at the plate. The Canton, Ohio native continued to light up the base paths with three stolen bases in the contest to bring her season total to 22. Richards also scored both runs for the Eagles in her 16th multiple-hit game of the season.

Gerber also posted three hits and drove in both runs for EMU.

EMU tallied its first run in the bottom of the first on a Gerber RBI single up the middle, but Buffalo responded with a run in the top of the second to tie it up at one run apiece.

The Eagles would reclaim the lead in the third with clutch two-out hitting by the Green and White offense.

Richards led off the third with her second hit of the game and advanced to third on two consecutive stolen bases. Gerber's two out double to the left center field gap brought in EMU's second run of the game, pushing the score to 2-1.

Both teams' offenses would remain fairly quiet throughout the remaining three and half innings allowing the Eagles to steal game two, 2-1, and improve to 11-7 in MAC play.

EMU will return to Varsity Field tomorrow, May 7, when the host Kent State for a single game scheduled for 2 p.m. The contest will also feature the team's third annual Knock Cancer Out of the Park Event as well as Alumni Day. Admission is free and live stats will be available on EMUEagles.com.
