YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Mike Brown, an assistant men's basketball coach at the University of South Alabama for the past two seasons and an Ann Arbor native, has been named an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan University, new Head Coach Rob Murphy announced today, May 5, 2011.
The 31-year-old Brown has basketball coaching experience on the high school, junior college and college levels, including two stints as a head coach.
In 2008-09 Brown was the head coach at Motlow State Community College in Tullahoma, Tenn. and led that team to the Tennessee Junior College Athletic Association (TJCAA) championship with a 22-8 record while coaching three All-TJCAA players and one All-American. Motlow reached the semifinals of the TJCCAA Tournament, falling to host Cleveland State Community College. Brown coached Tim Williams, an All-American and the co-TJCCAA Player of the Year.
During the 2006-07 season, he was the head men's basketball coach at Schoolcraft (Mich.) Community College and directed that squad to the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) title while posting a 23-10 record. For his efforts, was named the MCCAA Coach of the Year. All five sophomores on that Schoolcraft team signed with NCAA-Division I schools.
Brown began his coaching career at nearby Belleville High School as an assistant boy's basketball coach, helping lead the Tigers to a 21-2 record and the MEGA Red Division championship in 2004-05.
From Belleville, Brown joined the Schoolcraft C.C. program as an assistant men's basketball coach in 2005-06 and helped that team to a 23-5 record before taking over as the head coach the next season.
Brown left Schoolcraft to join the Kent State University men's basketball program as the director of basketball operations in 2007-08. In that season KSU won the Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Four players earned all-MAC honors and one was an All-American. The Golden Flashes were also ranked in the Associated Press and ESPN Coaches' polls during the season.
After that one season at Kent State, Brown was named the head coach at Motlow and following that one year, moved on to the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Ala. where he was an assistant men's basketball coach and recruiting coordinator from 2009 through the 2011 season.
As an intercollegiate basketball player, Brown earned four varsity letters at Siena Heights (Mich.) University (1998-2000) and Wayne State (Mich.) University (2000-02). Siena Heights posted a 58-15 mark in his two seasons with two trips to the NAIA National Tournament, including a national semifinals appearance and two conference titles. As a sophomore he led the team in scoring, assists, and steals, was a third team All-American and first team all-conference and was named to the all-defensive team and all-academic teams.
He played his final two seasons at Wayne State, earning all-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors as a junior after leading the team in scoring, assists and steals. Brown was named the preseason player of the year in 2001 but played in only seven games after suffering a season-ending injury.
While a high school player at Ann Arbor's Huron H.S., Brown was a sixth-team All-Stater and first-team All-Area player as a senior in 1996-97.
Brown earned both his bachelor's degree and master's degree at Wayne State University, completing his B.A. in business in 2002 and his M.A. in sport management in 2004.
Brown is married to Melissa (Green), a 2008 Eastern Michigan University graduate and former standout track performer for the Eagles.
