Box Score

KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Another pitcher's duel resulted in another win for the host Kent State University Golden Flashes as they nipped the Eastern Michigan University baseball team, 1-0, in game two of a three-game Mid-American Conference cross-divisional series at Schoonover Stadium, today, April 9.

Kent State's Kyle Hallock allowed just five hits while striking out four and walking one over seven innings pitched for his fourth victory of the year. Justin Gill closed the game with two hitless innings to claim his second save of the season. EMU starter Corey Chaffins (4-3) was the hard-luck loser as he allowed just a run on eight hits over seven and two-thirds innings pitched.

With the loss Eastern Michigan drops to 18-12 overall, 5-3 in the MAC while Kent State improves to 19-10 (7-1 MAC).

The lone run of the contest came on a Travis Shaw RBI groundout in the fifth inning. Derek Toadvine was the one who came around to score after leading off the inning with an infield single to third. He advanced to second on a walk to the next batter and then to third on a groundout before Shaw drove him in.

The Eagles had few scoring opportunities, but had a chance to take the lead in each of the first two innings. Ken Battiston led off the game with a single to left and then stole second and third to put the Golden Flashes on edge early. But Hallock rose to the occasion and struck out each of the next three batters, two of which were of the looking variety, to end the threat.

In the second inning, Tucker Rubino reached on a one out walk and then Magsig singled to right field. Trying to be aggressive, Rubino looked to go from first to third on the play, but the right fielder Ben Klafczynski came up firing and gunned him out in a close play. It proved to be a costly play as the next batter, Matt Hitt, singled up the middle.

The Eagles had just one runner reach third for the rest of the game as Battiston made it around in the sixth with two outs, but Lee Longo then grounded out to short to end the frame.

Battiston finished with two of the Eagles' five hits in the contest while Jimmy Rider, T.J. Sutton and George Roberts each recorded two hits for the Golden Flashes, who tallied eight as a team.

The Eagles will look to salvage the third and final game of the series tomorrow, April 10, at noon. Sophomore Steve Weber (3-2) will start for the Eagles and face Kent State's David Starn (4-1).
