Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) became Eastern Michigan University's all-time hit king as he recorded three hits on the day, giving him 275 for his career and moving him past Derrick Peterson ('04) for the top spot, while the Eagles defeated Western Michigan University in both ends of a doubleheader in Mid-American Conference West Division play at Robert J. Bobb Stadium, today, April 23.

Senior left-hander Robert Wendzicki (Brook Park, Ohio-Midpark) led the Eagles to a 4-2 victory in game one after tossing his first career complete game, allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out six and walking two. Senior right-hander Corey Chaffins (New London, Ohio-New London) followed that up with a 6-1 win of his own, going seven innings and allowing just a run on six hits en route to his career-high fifth victory of the season.

Offensively, Brent Ohrman (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian), Daniel Russell (Grandville, Mich.-Grandville) and Tucker Rubino (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Horizon-Glendale C.C.) each recorded four-hit days with all three tallying a three-hit game, respectively.

The Eagles move to 23-15 overall, 8-6 in MAC play with the sweep, while the Broncos fall to 18-20 (7-7 MAC).

In game one, the Eagles struck first with a first inning solo homerun by Ohrman, his second of the year. In the third inning, Ohrman smacked a one out single and then stole the first of two bases in the contest to get into scoring position. Two batters later, Ben Magsig (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Lansing C.C.) singled him home to give EMU a 2-0 lead.

The Broncos got both runs back in the fourth inning when Patrick Duncan doubled home Ryan McMillin prior to Troy Forton's sacrifice fly to bring Duncan home to tie the game.

Those were the lone runs that Wendzicki (3-4) would allow in the game as he went the distance for his third victory of the year.

His teammates put him in line for the win in the eighth inning with two runs on four hits. Leonard's one out RBI double to left broke a 2-2 tie and the Eagles didn't look back from there. The hit also moved him into a tie with Derrick Peterson ('04) for the EMU all-time career hits record of 274.

He wasted no time getting the record out of the way with a first inning RBI single in the top of the first of game two. Leonard's base hit fell just in front of the right fielder, Jack Scanlon, which brought Ken Battiston (West Milton, Ohio-Milton Union) around to score. The Canton, Ohio native also ranks eighth nationally among NCAA Division I active career hit leaders.

Western Michigan tied the game in their half of the second as Brad Wehrmeyer singled up the middle off Chaffins to drive in Grant Simotes. The right-hander went on to allow just two hits in his final five innings of work.

The Eagles provided some insurance along the way with Magsig putting them in front for good with a fourth inning two-run homer, his team-leading fourth long ball of the season.

Russell, who went 4-for-7 on the day, executed a perfect suicide squeeze play in the sixth inning to give the Eagles a 4-1 lead. Magsig came in to score from third base in what was the fourth successful squeeze play for the Eagles this season.

Ohrman and Russell poured it on with RBI doubles in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively, giving EMU an insurmountable 6-1 lead.

WMU tried their best to get back in the game by loading the bases with no outs in the eighth inning. Lefty Collin Taylor (Cincinnati, Ohio-Lakota West) relieved Tim Combs (Dayton, Ohio-Wayne) and got the first out by striking out Simotes.

After walking in a run to make the score 6-2, Head Coach Jay Alexander brought in righty Kristian Calibuso (Brandon, Fla.-Armwood-Florida State College) and it paid off. The sophomore struck out Brooks Bielke and then got Tim Cross to ground out to end the threat with minimal damage.

The Brandon, Fla. native came in for his second inning of work in the ninth and – despite giving up an RBI single to McMillin – earned the five-out save, his third of the year.

The Eagles look to sweep the three-game series as both teams meet for the finale on Easter Sunday, April 24. EMU sophomore Steve Weber (North Royalton, Ohio-North Royalton) will go for his second straight win as he toes the rubber against Western's Steve Laudicina in a 1 p.m. start time.
