YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)
— Five timely errors plagued the Eastern Michigan University softball team in their 5-3 loss to Miami University this afternoon, April 17, at Varsity Field in Ypsilanti, Mich.

The Eagles drop to 7-5 in Mid-American Conference play and 21-11 overall, while the RedHawks improve to 19-17 on the season with a 4-6 record in the MAC.

Freshman pitcher Lauren Wells (Lowell, Ind.-Lowell) drops to 7-2 on the year, going 1.1 innings in the circle.

Jaclyn Caro (Chino, Calif.-St. Lucy's Priory) closed out the game with three strikeouts and giving up one earned run in 5.2 innings of work.

Sophomore second basemen Nellie Coquillard (Niles, Mich.-Niles) led the Eagles' offense with a 3-for-4 performance, highlighted by her solo homerun to dead centerfield in the third inning to tally the Green and White's first run of the ballgame.

Sarah Gerber (North Canton, Ohio)
contributed with a two-hit day at the plate, knocking in two runs and scoring once for EMU.

Much like yesterday's contest, EMU suffered a multi-run second inning by the RedHawks as the visiting team stroked three hits and took advantage of a wild pitch and an EMU error to take the early 4-0 lead.

The Eagles bats remained dormant until the third inning, until Coquillard dug in at the plate. With two outs and a full count, the Niles, Mich. native drilled a long ball that just cleared the center field fence to bring the home team within three.

The RedHawks responded in the fourth inning on a Daniela Torres RBI single to reclaim their four run lead.

In the bottom of the same frame, the Eagles threatened after Gerber led off the inning with a shot to the right-center field gap for her sixth double on the year, however Miami managed to end the threat and retire the side on a strikeout, fielder's choice, and a ground out.

The Eagles' offense manufactured two more runs in the sixth with just one swing of the bat. Stacie Skodinski (South Bend, Ind.-Washington) reached base on an MU fielding error, bringing Gerber up to the plate. The junior connected on a towering two-run blast that landed well beyond the right field fence to set the score at 5-3.

After successfully retiring the RedHawks in the top of the seventh, the Eagles looked to make a comeback in the seventh; however EMU could not find the offensive fire power it needed as the Eagles suffered a 5-3 setback.

EMU will take the week off before hitting the road for conference games at both Akron and Ohio. The Eagles are slated for a doubleheader with the Zips on Friday, April 22, at 1 p.m. before trekking over to Athens, Ohio for single games on Saturday and Sunday.
