CLARKSVILLE, TENN. (EMUEagles.com) — A fourteen-hit offensive surge powered the Eastern Michigan University softball team past Austin Peay State University, 8-3, this afternoon, March 26, to take the first of a three-game series with the Lady Governors.
Five Eagles posted multiple-hit performances and were paced by Sarah Gerber's (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover) 3-for-4 effort at the plate. The junior catcher knocked in three RBIs and scored once for the Green and White.
Lauren Delapaz (Plymouth, Mich.- Canton), Jessica Richards (Canton, Ohio-Jackson), Stacie Skodinski (South Bend, Ind,-Washington), and Lindsay Smith (Seville, Ohio-Cloverleaf) also registered multi-hit games.
Jenna Ignowski (Niles, Mich.-Niles) picked up the win in the circle, improving to 7-1 on the season. Despite allowing seven APSU hits, the sophomore held her opponents to just one earned run. The righty hurler also fanned seven while walking just one in the complete game effort.
APSU's Ashley Bolda is issued the loss and drops to 1-5 on the year.
EMU was quick to strike, tallying three runs in the opening frame. Richards set the tone for the Eagles with a game-opening single through the right side, but was caught in a fielder's choice at second base off the bat of Delapaz. Skodinski connected on her fourth double of the season to plate Delapaz for the early 1-0 advantage. Four consecutive EMU hits by Gerber, Nellie Coquillard (Niles, Mich.-Niles), McKenna Russ (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover), and Kayla Kostich (Taylor, Mich.-Cabirini) pushed the Eagles lead to three.
APSU responded in the bottom of the first after an illegal pitched plated the runner from third base, and chipped in another run in the second after an EMU throwing error, but the Eagles managed to tighten up defensively to salvage a 3-2 lead through two innings of play.
Timely hits in the fourth inning from Richards, Skodinski, and Gerber swelled the Eagles lead to three, and a three-run sixth inning pushed EMU ahead, 8-2.
APSU threatened late in the bottom of the final inning, plating a run to cut the Eagles lead to five, but the Eagles escaped the inning and ran away with the 8-3 win.
In the afternoon's 1:30 game, unfavorable weather conditions forced the contest to be suspended in the top of the third inning with APSU leading, 1-0. The contest is slated to resume tomorrow afternoon at 11 a.m. CST. The final game of the series will start 30 min following the conclusion of that contest.
