The Eagles pick up wins over both UMBC and St. Francis, improving to 3-2 on the year

Box scores: Game 1. Game 2.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (EMUeagles.com)
— The Eastern Michigan University softball team took two wins over both UMBC and St. Francis (Pa.) this afternoon, Feb. 28, in Fort Myers, Fla.

In the opening game, the Eagles topped the Retrievers of UMBC, 8-0, in five innings of play. The Green and White rattled out 12 hits in the contest, while holding their opponent to just four.

Jenna Ignowski (Niles, Mich.-Niles) picked up the win for the Green and White and improves to 2-1 on the season. The sophomore hurler struck out five in her second career complete-game shutout. Her first shutout was accomplished on the very same field in the 2010 season in a 1-0 win over Florida Gulf Coast on March 2.

Eight of EMU's nine starters registered hits on the afternoon, with sophomore outfielder Lindsay Smith (Seville, Ohio-Cloverleaf) converting on a perfect 3-for-3 effort at the plate. Freshman Kayla Kostich (Taylor, Mich.-Cabrini) connected for three hits and knocked in two runs for the Green and White.

EMU tallied their first run in the opening frame of the contest. With runners at first and second, sophomore Nellie Coquillard (Niles, Mich.-Niles) doubled to left to score Kostich and jump to a 1-0 lead.

The EMU offense continued to build their lead in the following inning. Back-to-back singles by Lauren Delapaz (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) and Smith put runners at first and second. Katy Blaharski (Carleton, Mich.-Airport) turned in a two-run infield single, increasing the EMU advantage to three. Kostich singled to leftfield to wave around Blaharski from second to score.

UMBC threatened in the third, manufacturing three hits, but the Eagles defense shut down their attempts and went on to add another run in the bottom of the inning.

In the fourth, Kostich led off the frame with a single to centerfield. Sarah Gerber (North Canton, Mich.-Hoover) drew a walk, and a throwing error on an EMU steal attempt plated another run for the Green and White. Amanda Stanton (Homer Glen, Ill.-Lockport Township) increased the lead to seven in recording her first career hit down the leftfield line.

As a result of softball's eight-run rule, the Eagles ended the game early in the bottom of the fifth when Smith scored EMU's eighth run off of a Kostich single to left.

It would take clutch hitting from the Green and White to take their second win of the day later this afternoon, as EMU and St. Francis (Pa.) went eight innings in a close, 7-6 contest.

The Eagles struck first in the top of the second inning when Coquillard drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on an error by SFU's Taylor Darnielle. Jessica Richards (Canton, Ohio-Jackson) reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Coquillard to score and put EMU up, 1-0.

SFU responded in the bottom of the fourth and took a 2-1 advantage, but the Eagles offense retaliated with a three-run rally in the top of the fifth. Richards kick-started the comeback with a single to the pitcher, and Blaharski followed with a walk. Kostich and Gerber hit back-to-back singles and a sacrifice fly from Stacie Skodinski (South Bend, Ind.-Washington) put the Eagles ahead, 3-2.

EMU added three more insurance runs in the top of the seventh off of three hits, a Red Flash error and wild pitch to set the score to 6-2, but SFU's offense surged back scoring four runs on three hits to tie the game at six apiece.

With the score deadlocked, both teams were forced to move to extra innings. EMU manufactured the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth thanks to an SFU error that allowed Courtney Nicholson (Navarre, Ohio-Canton Central Catholic) to score. The run proved to be enough, as the SFU offense failed to register any runs in the bottom of the eighth giving the Eagles their third win of the season.

Gerber led all EMU hitters in the game with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate and two RBIs. Richards tallied two hits in five appearances, scoring two runs and knocking in one.

Jaclyn Caro (Chino, Calif.-St. Lucy's Priory)
recorded four strike outs in the win for EMU (1-0), while SFU's Megan Layne (2-4) is issued the loss. Ignowski is awarded the save in an inning of scoreless work.

The Eagles will take a day off and return to FGCU to again take on St. Francis in a doubleheader matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
