BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)
– It had been a long 11 years since the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team captured a Mid-American Conference Championship, but the wait is finally over as the team put together a brilliant second day of competition for a come-from-behind win to secure the 2011 MAC Indoor Title.

With a score of 118, EMU was able to take 90 points on the final day, more than runner-up Western Michigan scored for the entire meet (89). Miami finished third with 81 points while Kent State (76 points), Toledo (66.50 points) and Akron (51 points) rounded out the top half of the finishers. Central Michigan placed seventh with 50.50 points, Bowling Green scored 45 points for eighth, while Buffalo and Ohio put up 33 and 32 points to finish ninth and 10th. Ball State's 13-point effort and Northern Illinois' eight point score were 11th and 12th, in that order.

Heading into day two in third place trailing Kent State and Akron, and tied with host school Bowling Green, the Eagles had some of their strongest events in front of them, including the 800-meter run in which veteran runners Lauren Quaintance and Beverly Elcock finished first and second, respectively.

The story of the day for the meet may have been the running of sophomore superstar Ashlee Abraham. The speedster, who already owned the MAC's fastest time in the 60-meter dash this year, broke a 12-year-old MAC Meet Record by running a 7.34 in the event. The previous best was set by Ball State's Latasha Jenkins when she won a MAC Title for her outing in 1999. Abraham didn't relax her running shoes after the effort, however, also notching a win in the 200-meter dash. In fact, the Eagles also took a stranglehold of that event, also placing fourth with Naomi Andre and fifth with Rosie White. That one event alone earned EMU 19 points.

Shantavia Williams and Asia Rawls would put another 10 points on the scoreboard for the Green and White as the duo placed third and fourth in the 400-meter race, while Courtney Calka's fifth-place 3,000-meter run would continue to help the Eagles' total grow.

Williams, Andre and Rawls raced in another very impressive EMU showing as the group, along with Dejaa Shearer, won the 4x400-meter relay in dramatic fashion. The Eagles were behind slightly after the first leg, and a less-than-perfect baton exchange between the second and third legs left Williams with an even harder gap to make up. She put the quartet on her back, however, and closed the distance between herself and Western Michigan's Iris Campbell and won by a half footstep, as EMU crossed the line in 3:42.37 and WMU followed just behind with a time of 3:42.45.

In the field, freshman powerhouse Shnell Wishart barely missed out on MAC Gold, finishing second in the triple jump with a leap of 41-00.50.

Four day two wins ultimately propelled the Eagles, but MAC 2011 Indoor Coach of the Year Sue Parks said that today was a culmination of a season's worth of hard work from the coaches and athletes and that it was a total team effort.

The Eagles will enjoy the win before getting right back into action next weekend in preparation for a repeat performance during the outdoor season.
