Eagles Take Fourth at MAC Championships, Four Earn All-MAC

The Eagles earn 385 points for a fourth place finish at the 2011 Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships in Athens, Ohio

— The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team accumulated a total of 385 points to bring home a fourth place finish at the 2011 Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at Ohio University, today, Feb. 26.

Briana Emig (Sewickley, Pa.-Ambridge), Sarah Kowalski (Muncie, Ind.-Yorktown), and Lesley Vizurraga (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills North) were named to the All-MAC first team, while Amanda Kiefer (Piqua, Ohio-Lehman Catholic) earned second team All-MAC accolades. Head Diving Coach Buck Smith was named the 2011 MAC Diving Coach of the Year for the second season in a row.

In the evening's opening event, Emig medaled after racing to a third place finish in the 1,650 freestyle. The sophomore touched the wall in a career best 16:21.78 effort to score 16 points for EMU. Toledo's Claire Leichty took first in the event in 16:16.33 to set a new MAC meet record.

In the 200 backstroke final, Kiefer paced the Eagles with her fourth place performance, completing the distance in 2:00.24. Rachel Stearns from Ohio was the top finisher with a first place time of 1:57.20 followed by runner up Leah Thorton of Miami in 1:57.99.

Kowalski finished in fourth place for the Green and White in the 100 freestyle. The senior's 50.17 effort qualified as a Division I-B consideration mark.

EMU's Chelsea Allard (Walnut Creek, Calif.-Lake Forest (Ill.)) and Lexi Piranian (Brentwood, Tenn.-Ravenwood) took 10th and 14th place in the 200 breaststroke. Allard registered a time of 2:18.19, while Piranian completed the event in 2:20.85. Miami's Kelsey Vehr bested the MAC Meet record for the event in 2:10.37 en route to landing her MAC Swimmer of the Year honors.

In the 200 butterfly, Jaquelyn Swartz (Centerville, Ohio-Centerville) was the fastest EMU swimmer in the event and took 13th place in 2:03.33, while Elisa Torres (Antioch, Calif.-Deer Valley) followed in 14th place with her time of 2:03.44. Last year's MAC Co-Swimmer of the Year Rachel Heim of Ohio took first place with a MAC record time of 1:59.39.

The Eagles clinched the three meter diving crown thanks to an impressive performance from Vizurraga. The senior earned 322.75 points to lead the way for a first place finish in the event.

The final event of the evening featured the 400 freestyle relay team of Helena Tolic ( Zagreb, Croatia-Sportska Gimnazija), Kowalski, Tracy Morgan (Strongsville, Ohio-Strongsville), and Emig combined for a 3:28.46 performance for an eighth place finish.
