BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team finished third at the Mid-American Conference Champions which concluded today, Feb. 26, at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green Ohio. It was just the third time in the past 16 years that the Eagles failed to win the indoor title.
In the process, sophomores Vanier Joseph and Terefe Ejigu earned meet honors on top of their MAC individual titles. Joseph was named the men's track most outstanding performer after he posted a MAC-season-best-time of 7.75 in the 60-meter hurdles. Terefe Ejigu was also a bright spot for the Eagles, as the sophomore won the mile run, the 5,000-meter run and placed third in the 3,000-meter run. Kevin Lanier also finished third in the 60 hurdles. For his performance, he was named the meet's Most Valuable Performer.
Sensational freshman Brycen Spratling also put his dominance of the 400-meter dash on display as the speedy 18-year-old won the first MAC Championship of his career in the event. Spratling, who already owned the 10th-best time in the nation this year, was behind by about 20 meters with just over 100 meter remaining before he turned on the jets and crossed the finish line with a time of 48.09, nearly two-tenths of a second before his second-place counterpart.
But it injuries and miscues which impaired the Eagles sights for a 14th MAC Title, as senior captain Clint Allen pulled up lame after winning the 60-meter dash, and pole vaulter Joe Tenser was taken to the hospital due to a laceration of the midsection, which he suffered after failing to clear a height and falling, landing partially inside of the pole box and partially in the field. He was still able to earn fourth place in the event because of an earlier jump prior to the injury he sustained.
Allen's injury forced him to sit out of the 200-meter sprint, which undoubtedly cost EMU points, as Allen finished with the top preliminary time going into the finals.
The Eagles also lost out on valuable points after finishing second in the 4x400-meter relay, but being disqualified for a lane violation and another DQ in the 4x200-meter run, which was caused when Koleon Prescott incidentally collided with an Akron runner on the opening leg of the race. EMU finished third in the event, but received no points because of the miscue.
Freshman mid-distance runners Joshua George and Moise Frisch also got to the championship podium as the duo finished third and fourth, respectively, in the event.
The Eagles racked up 92 points in total, while Akron won its first ever indoor title, scoring 161 points. Kent State finished in second place with 144 points. Buffalo was fourth with 63 points and Central Michigan was last with 61 points.
