Four top-three finishes lands EMU in third place at MACs
Day One Results
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Third place is where the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team currently sits after six scored events on day one of the 2011 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship in Perry Field House on the campus of Bowling Green State University. The squad was able to take two second-place finishes and two third-place finishes.
The Eagles were able to tap into its core of veterans to earn big points, as an experienced distance medley relay team placed second. Morgan Churchwell was joined by senior Lauren Quaintance, and juniors Beverly Elcock and Dejaa Shearer, to post a time of 11:44.79 in the event. Jessica Hemingway also came through for EMU, placing second in the pole vault. She cleared the same height as the winning jumper, but it took her three attempts as opposed to Akron's winner who cleared the height in one attempt.
Sophomore runner Courtney Calka also played a part en route to the team's first day third-place result as she earned six points with a third-place finish of her own in the 5,000-meter run.
Rosie White's six-point effort also bolstered the Eagles, as the jumper leapt to a mark of 19-02.50 in the long jump, finishing third in the event.
For day two's events, standout sprinter Ashlee Abraham will be competing as she took the top time in the 60-meter and 200-meter sprints for a qualifying spot in each of the finals. Joining her in the 200-meter final will be teammates Naomi Andre and White. Shantavia Williams and Asia Rawls will be on the point hunt for the Eagles tomorrow as well as each runner will run in the 400-meter final, while Elcock and Quaintance will take off in the 800-meter final.
The Eagles trail only first-place Kent State (34 points) and second-place Akron (29 points) and are tied (28 points) with host BG and the four points ahead of Western Michigan and Miami (24 points each).
Day two competition begins at 11 a.m. on Feb. 26 as EMU looks for its first MAC Title since 2000.
