FORT MYERS, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University softball team showcased an impressive offensive outing in its season opener, pounding out ten hits to capture a 6-1 victory over the UMBC Retrievers today, Feb. 25, in Fort Myers, Fla.
Six Eagles registered hits in the contest, with four members having multiple-hit performances at the plate. Stacie Skodinski (South Bend, Ind.-Washington) paced EMU with a 2-for-2 effort at the dish. In her first at-bat of the season, she connected on a 250-foot bomb that tagged the top of the scoreboard just beyond the left field fence. The round-tripper marks the 16th in the senior's career, tying her for fifth on the program's all-time career home run list.
The Green and White opened up the game with a solid defensive stand as senior hurler Jaclyn Caro (Chino, Calif.-St. Lucy's Priory) forced a ground out and registered two of her four strikeouts on the day to retire the side. The California native held the Retrievers to just one run in 4.2 innings of work.
In the bottom of the first, Jessica Richards (Canton, Ohio-Jackson) kick-started EMU's offense with a single up the middle, but she would later get called out for leaving early at first base. Skodinski eventually picked up her teammate with a solo shot to left, putting the Eagles up early, 1-0.
The Reteivers had an answer in the top of the third inning with an RBI single from Lauren Brumell, but two consecutive ground ball outs shut down any threat of a UMBC rally.
EMU would wait until the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead. Katy Blaharski (Carleton, Mich.-Airport) led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Skodinski. A passed ball moved Blaharski to third, and Sarah Gerber (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover) knocked a single through the left side to bring her home.
Nellie Coquillard (Niles, Mich.-Niles) drew a walk to put runners at the corners for the Eagles, and a triple by junior McKenna Russ (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover) cleared the bases to swell the Eagles' lead to three.
EMU's tallied its final two runs in the sixth, thanks to two retriever errors and a single by Skodinski that brought in Richards for the score.
Jenna Ignowski (Niles, Mich.-Niles) closed out the game and picked up the win in 2.1 innings of work in the circle, shutting down the Retriever offense while striking out one.
The Eagles will return to action later this evening when they face Albany for game six of the Moe's Blue and Green Invitational. First pitch is slated for 8:15 p.m.
