Terefe Ejigu wins 5,000-meter gold

Day One Results

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)
– The first day of the 2011 Mid-American Conference Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championship got underway today, Friday, Feb. 25, in Perry Field House at Bowling Green State University, as the Eastern Michigan University men's team closed the first of two sessions in fifth place with 11 points after four scored events.

Sensational sophomore and 2010 Outdoor MAC Most Valuable Performer Terefe Ejigu came up huge for the Green and White in the 5,000-meter run, taking first place in the event to score 10 of the Eagles' 11 total first-day points. With a time of 14:37.93, Ejigu crossed the line nearly four seconds faster than the second finisher.

Kevin Lanier scored the Eagles only other point of the opening day, as the junior heptathlon athlete placed sixth in the long jump portion of the event to secure the point.

EMU was unable to earn sure-fire points in the distance medley relay as the quartet of Matt Hammersmith, Brycen Spratling, Nate Lonsway and Cole Sanseverino was disqualified. Their time of just more than 10:06 would have earned a third-place finish.

In preliminary qualifying rounds, senior captain Clint Allen prevailed with the top time in the 60-meter dash and had the third-fastest time in the 200-meter dash, advancing to the Feb. 26 final round showdown in each event. Joining him in each race will be fellow senior Koleon Prescott, who took the second-place finish in the 60 and also finished among the qualifiers in the 200. Jairus Saunders will join the pair in the 60-meter sprint, having missed the 200 by one spot. The three runners have the potential to earn 40 points in those two events alone with top finishes in each race.

Other young guns should also provide EMU with a day two spark, as NCAA Qualifier Spratling runs in the 400-meter distance, which he placed first in the preliminaries and also heads into the finals having run the fastest time in the MAC this year. Teammate Chris Scott will run alongside him in the race after also qualifying for the finals.

In the 800-meter run, Joshua George, Moise Frisch and Kyle Fortin represent three of the nine runners to race after the trio all advanced to the finals for Eastern.

Lanier will have another opportunity to score for EMU as he runs in the 60-meter hurdles after qualifying with the sixth-fastest time, while reigning Indoor and Outdoor MAC champion Vanier Joseph finished less than one hundredth of a second behind Akron's Tyshaun Peoples with the second-fastest time in the event. He will attempt to earn his third MAC gold medal in the event in three attempts.

The Eagles are looking up at fourth-place Buffalo (19 points), third-place Central Michigan (24 points), second-place Kent State (29 points) and first-place Akron (38 points).

Day two competition begins at 11 a.m. on Feb. 26.
