Nick Hendrick and David Wade were honored prior to Sunday's match

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling squad battled hard against a 15th-ranked Kent State team, but came up short as the Golden Flashes took the Mid-American Conference tilt, 30-3, on Senior Day at Bowen Field House, Sunday, Feb. 13.

EMU seniors Nick Hendrick (Columbiaville, Mich.-Powers Catholic)  and David Wade (Beavercreek, Ohio-Beavercreek) were each honored prior to the match for their efforts as four-year starters at Eastern Michigan. The two combined for a career mark of 110-89 and were instrumental in helping transform EMU wrestling to what it is today under Head Coach Derek DelPorto.

EMU's Chris Eggert  (Dundee, Mich.-Dundee) was the lone Eagle to record a victory today as the Eagles fall to 11-9 overall, 0-3 in the MAC. Meanwhile, Kent State earned a share of the MAC title with the win as they move to 14-5, 4-0 in the MAC.

In the opening match at 125, EMU freshman Jared Germaine (Saginaw, Mich.-Saginaw) turned in a solid first period performance, recording a takedown and three near fall points to take a 6-2 lead into the second period. KSU's Nic Bedelyon answered back with a seven-point period and went on to take the match, 12-8.

At 133, EMU junior Filiberto Colon (Belleville, N.J.-Belleville Senior-Rider) fell behind early, but looked to have an opportunity to make a move late in the third period. Colon, down 6-5 in the third, tried for the near fall points, but time expired before he could complete the maneuver on his opponent, Tyler Small.

Freshman Seth Schaner (Big Rapids, Mich.-Big Rapids) was called on at 141, but struggled to get any momentum going throughout the match. KSU's Chase Skonieczny built a 4-0 lead through two periods and carried that through until the end. Schaner's late third period takedown just wasn't enough as he fell, 5-2, giving Kent State a 9-0 lead through three matches.

At 149, KSU's Marcel Clopton utilized his low center of gravity to stave off EMU's Corey Phillips (Canton, Mich.-Canton), who found few scoring opportunities. With the match still within reach for Phillips, Clopton did just enough to shut the door by scoring an escape, a takedown and a riding time point to take the match, 6-1.

In the 157-pound match, EMU's Lester France (Flatrock, Mich.-Flatrock Community) used three escapes to bring a tight match to 4-3 after two periods, but couldn't muster anything after that. Choosing down to start the third, Mallie Shuster of KSU tallied an escape and then earned one more point for riding time en route to a 6-3 victory to give his team a commanding, 15-0, lead.

At 165, Hendrick made his final start on the mat at Bowen Field House with hopes of getting something going for the Eagles, but could not. The match stayed close at 2-0 until late in the third period when KSU's Ross Tice earned an escape preceding his second takedown of the match to walk away with a 6-1 win.

Eggert finally got the Eagles on the board at 174, taking a 2-0 victory over Sli Bostelman of KSU. The sophomore moved to 3-0 in the MAC with the win and is now 15-12 overall for the season.

Freshman Khodor Hoballah (Dearborn, Mich.-Dearborn) fell behind early to KSU's Casey Newburg, 4-1, after the first period, but battled back. Hoballah regained riding time, but Newburg was too strong to turn over and Hoballah fell, 4-2. At 197, Travis Stanback (Solon, Ohio-Solon) met his match against sixth-ranked Dustin Kilgore. Kilgore made quick work, recording the pin at 17 seconds.

At heavyweight, EMU junior Wes Schroeder (Manitou Beach, Mich.-Addison) did all he could against Joe Tymosuzuk as it came down to the final seconds. Tymosuzuk held a slight 3-1 edge as Schroeder went in for the shot, but came up empty as time expired.
