Women's Track and Field Opens Indoor Season With a Win

YSPILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team was dominant to open the indoor season with a win at the Eagles/Rockets Holiday Meet which also featured the women's track and field team's from the University of Toledo and the University of Detroit-Mercy Friday, Dec. 9. Eastern took first in the triangular with a total of 123.50 points while Toledo came in second with 83 and the Titans brought up the rear with 64.50.
With a plethora of individual first place finishes for the Eagles, none were more impressive than Angela Scarber's 17.38-meter toss in the weight throw. This throw was not only a personal-best for Scarber but it also broke the previous EMU record of 16.35-meters set by Becky Leevy in the 2000 season. However, Scarber was not the only Eagle to shine in the field events Friday evening.
Adrienne Waisner was able to take first in the shot put with an 11.78-meter throw, while Meghan Powers and Jennifer Schornak tied for first in the pole vault with 3.50-meter jumps. Tatijana Jacobson was also able to lead the field in the high jump with a 1.68-meter leap. EMU did not keep their winning ways on the field as they were also successful on the track.
Kate Wolanin took the 60-meter hurdle with a 9.14 finish, while Morgan Churchwell completed the 3,000-meter run in 10:07.26 which was good for a first place finish. Victoria Voronko and Beverly Elcock took first and second in the 1,000-meter for EMU, while Shantavia Williams took the crown in the 300-meter dash with a 39.93. Ashley Wartley also took first for the Eagles with a 7.84 finish in the 60-meter dash.
In a pair of relays, the Green and White remained successful. Eastern won the 4x400-meter with a time of 3:54.99, while taking a 2:03.97 in the 4x200-meter, good for a second place finish.
The women's track and field team does not see competitive action again until Friday, Jan. 13, 2012 when it travels to Akron, Ohio for the Akron Opener.
