EVANSTON, Ill. (EMUEagles.com)—
Eastern Michigan University redshirt sophomore wrestler Jared Germaine continued his stellar start to the 2011-12 season by placing seventh at the 49th edition of the prestigious Ken Kraft Midlands Championships Friday, Dec. 30. Germaine outlasted nationally-ranked Trent Sprenkly of North Dakota State University in the seventh place match at 125 lbs., 5-4.

Germaine's seventh place finish made him the first placewinner at a Midlands tournament during the six-year tenure of Head Coach Derek DelPorto.

“Jared did an outstanding job,” said DelPorto. “He placed at one of the toughest tournaments in the country and is ready to keep getting better in preparation for the NCAA Championships.”

The Eagles were held off the podium in their previous trips to the Midlands in 2008 and 2010.

As the No. 7-ranked wrestler at 125 lbs., Germaine opened the tournament with a pair of victories by decision before dropping his third round match to No. 2 Matt McDonough of national powerhouse University of Iowa. The Saginaw, Mich. native won his second match over No. 9 Garrett Frey of Princeton University, 9-6, to earn his spot in Friday's competition.

The Saginaw, Mich. native got off to a great start on day two with a major decision over Nathan Fitzenreider of North Central College, 10-2. After dropping a 7-2 decision to No. 6 Joe Roth from Central Michigan University, Germaine dispatched Sprenkle in a well-fought battle for seventh place, 5-4.

With a 4-2 record at the two-day event, Germaine improved his season record to 14-3, tops among EMU starters.

Also competing in matches Friday were redshirt junior Aaron Sulzer (157 lbs.) and redshirt sophomore Phillip Joseph (174 lbs.). Both wrestlers fell a match short of a top-eight finish as No. 8-ranked Sulzer dropped his only bout of the day to Tommy Churchard of Purdue University, 5-2, and Joseph, also ranked eighth, was outdueled by Mid-American Conference rival John-Martin Cannon from the University at Buffalo, 12-4.

Sulzer is now 10-4 on the season after a 2-2 record at the tournament. Joseph went 4-2 to improve to 12-5.

“Aaron and Phillip fell a match short of placing but still need to be commended for their hard work,” DelPorto added. “Now it's back to the drawing board.”

As a team, the Eagles earned 26.5 points for 23rd place out of 43 teams. That point total was five better than a 21.5-point effort in 2008 and 17.5 better than nine points in 2010.

Iowa took home the team title in runaway fashion with 152 points and including one individual champion and four runners-up. Rounding out the top five were Northwestern University (105.5 points), Oklahoma University (94.5 points), Virginia Tech (76.5 points) and Edinboro University (74.5 points).

The Eagles will kick off 2012 Saturday, Jan. 7, with four matches at the Pitt Duals in Pittsburgh, Pa. Action begins at 9 a.m.
