Eagles start dual season with first win over MSU since 1988

EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)— It was an opening night nearly 24 years in the making as the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team defeated the Michigan State University Spartans for the first time since the 1987-88 season, 20-16, Friday evening, Nov. 18. Redshirt sophomore Jared Germaine ignited the Eagles–who won 5-of-10 matches on the evening–early on with a pin over Eric Olanowski at 6:35 of the 125 lbs. match.

Eastern Michigan (1-0) won for just the second time in 16 tries against the Spartans (0-1) dating back to the 1976-77 season. The last time an EMU team toppled its Big Ten Conference adversary was Jan. 21, 1988, when it recorded a 23-19 victory.

Friday's competition marked the first regular season dual for redshirt freshmen Jaylyn Bohl and Mike Curby. Redshirt sophomore Phillip Joseph also saw his first dual action since his freshman year in 2009-10, after spending last season sidelined with an injury.

The Eagles (1-0) led by as much as 14-0 after redshirt senior Andrew Novak won a convincing 13-2 major decision over Brandon Fifield at 133 lbs. and redshirt senior Corey Phillips did the same to Brian Gibbs at 141 lbs. by a 10-2 score.

Michigan State cut its deficit to 14-4 when No. 20 Dan Osterman recorded a major decision over redshirt freshman Jaylyn Bohl at 149 lbs., 13-5.

Redshirt junior Aaron Sulzer responded in the following match with arguably the knock-out blow of the evening, sending No. 15-ranked David Cheza back to the MSU bench with a 3-2 loss to push the EMU lead to 17-4. With the score tied at one early in the third period, Sulzer notched a decisive takedown to pull ahead, 3-1. Cheza cut the lead to 3-2 with an escape, but Sulzer stood his ground through the closing minutes to record the win.

After Anthony Jones, Jr. edged out redshirt senior Lester France, 5-3, at 165 lbs., Joseph made the most of his first dual in nearly two years with a hard-fought 2-1 decision over Curran Jacobs at 174 lbs. The win gave EMU a 20-7 lead  with three matches remaining.

Joseph's decision would prove to be the final individual victory of the night as, Ian Hinton bested redshirt freshman Mike Curby, 8-4, at 184 lbs., No. 16 Tyler Dickenson outlasted redshirt sophomore Nick Whitenburg at 197 lbs., 5-3, and No. 14 Mike McClure got the best of redshirt senior Wes Schroeder at heavyweight, 6-1. However, the Green and White's stellar start was enough to end up on the winning end of the dual, 20-16.

EMU now heads off to Troy, N.Y., for the Northeast Regional Saturday, Nov. 26.
