YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team officially opened the Rob Murphy Era with a convincing 81-55 win over a visiting Earlham College team here Sunday, Oct. 29, in an exhibition game in the Convocation Center.

Murphy was named EMU's head coach, April 21, 2011, and Sunday's exhibition was the first outing for the 2011-12 Eagles and his team was strong on both ends of the court, shooting 54.4 percent from the field, hitting 31-of-57 field goal attempts while holding Earlham to just 38.3 percent from the field while forcing 19 turnovers.

Offensively, EMU had four players in double figures with senior guard Antonio Green (Inkster, Mich.-Dearborn Heights Robichaud) leading the way with 17 points, followed by transfer guard Austin Harper (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven-Glen Oaks C.C.) with 15, junior guard Derek Thompson (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale-SEMO) and junior forward Matt Balkema (Warren, Mich.-Cousino) with 13 each.  Junior forward Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) scored nine points with a team-best eight rebounds.

Earlham was led by Justin Barger and Ryan Taylor with 11 points each.

The Eagles raced out to a quick 10-2 lead in the game's first four minutes with Thompson scoring five of those points.

Eastern slowly and methodically boosted its lead to 18, 27-9, with 7:34 left in the first half when transfer guard Harper connected on a layup plus foul shot.

Senior guard Darrell Lampley (Linden, New Jersey-Linden-Lakeland C.C.) would boost EMU's advantage to 26, 41-15, on a spinning drive to the hoop at the 3:01 mark left in the half.

The visitors would cut it to 20 with just three seconds left when Josh Green fired in a long jump to make it 46-26 heading into the locker room.

Thompson and Green led the first-half charge with 11and 10 points respectively while Green also added five rebounds.  Justin Barger paced the visitors with nine.

The Eagles came out of halftime intermission on fire both offensively and defensely, scoring 21 points in the first 10 minutes of the second stanza while holding the Quakers to just seven.

Murphy was able to substitute freely over the final eight minutes as EMU posted the 81-55 victory.

EMU will have one more exhibition, Monday, Nov. 7, against Marygrove College before opening the regular seaswon Friday, Nov. 11, at home against the University of illinois-Chicago at 7 p.m.
