YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team scored early and often in a 5-1 rout over Ball State University Friday afternoon, Oct. 21, at Scicluna Field. The Eagles got a pair of goals from Bianca Rossi and Stephanie Clarke added her first of the year as the squad clawed closer to the top-eight in the Mid-American Conference standings.
The Green and White jumped out a 2-0 lead 20 minutes into the game. Ball State would cut the EMU lead to 2-1, but the Eagles erased any hope of a Cardinals comeback with three goals over the remainder of the game.
In addition to Rossi and Clarke's goals, Emily Dzik connected for her second of the season off a Clarke corner kick. The goal was good for the first converted off a corner this season.
Angela Vultaggio also hit for her fifth goal on assists by Cara Cutaia and Chelsea Detrick.
Both Rossi and Clarke notched four-point games. Maggie Manville stopped eight-of-nine shots she faced
Brigit Reder scored the Cardinals' only goal of the match with Amanda Dreyfus recording an assist.
The Eagles (3-11-2; 3-5-1 MAC) won for the third time in the last four matches, while the Cardinals (9-6-3; 4-3-2 MAC) dropped their second straight. EMU outshot BSU, 23-21.
Eastern Michigan's goal fest got underway just two minutes into the contest, when Rossi notched her first of two goals off a rebound from Chelsea Detrick. Detrick started the play with a perfectly played challenge resulting in the initial shot.
Rossi struck again in the 20th minute in similar fashion to her first goal. This time a rebound off an attempt from Clarke at the right side of the penalty area rolled to the true freshman, who drilled a shot through a screen and into the open goal.
In the 29th minute, Reder headed a corner kick into the EMU goal to cut the lead to 2-1. The Eagles regained their two-goal lead minutes later, when Dzik deposited a header of her own on Clarke's corner kick into the net.
To begin the second half, the Eastern Michigan defense was hard at work turning away a pair of Ball State scoring chances to preserve the 3-1 score.
Vultaggio's goal in the 54th minute all but sealed the deal for the Eagles, and Clarke's goal in the 87th minute ended a frustrating season-long goalless streak for.
EMU entered the day in 10th place in the MAC and can still make a push for the postseason in its final two games of the regular season next week.
The Eagles will be back in action Sunday, Oct. 23, when they take on the University of Toledo at Scicluna Field. Prior to the 1 p.m. kickoff, the five graduating seniors will be honored for their on-field excellence in a pre-game ceremony.
