Eagles Drop Home Opener to Wildcats

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team opened up the 2011-12 campaign with a 165-130 loss to Northwestern University today, Oct. 21, at Jones Natatorium.
The Green and White won five of today's 16 events, with Jeffrey Craig and Jacob Hanson both taking home multiple victories.
Craig was the top performer in the one and three-meter dives. He tallied 357.61 points on the one-meter boards and posted 361.73 points in the three-meter event to top all competitors this afternoon.
Andrew Saunders also faired well in both events, taking third in the one meter event and placing second on the three-meter.
Hanson's victories came in the 200 Backstroke and 200 Individual Medley. The Normal, Ill. native was the first to touch the wall in the 200 Back at 1:51.60, and his 1:53.56 time in the 200 IM was good enough for his second first place performance of the day.
Teammate Michael Swain finished just behind Hanson in the 200 IM, posting a 1:56.36 performance. Swain would also place third in both Breaststroke events.
The quartet of Matt Zavislak, Dexter Foos, Gus Everson, and Brian Moore represented the Eagles' final first place finish of the afternoon, as the 400 Freestyle Relay team put together a 3:11.97 effort.
Freshman Franco Petrone faired well in his first collegiate dual-meet, placing second in both the 1,000 Freestyle (9:47.02) and the 500 Freestyle (4:42.42), while teammate Troy Esentan also clinched two second place performances on the day in the 200 and 100 Breaststroke, recording times of 2:07.20 and 58.75, respectively.
The Eagles (0-1, 0-0 MAC), will remain idle until Nov. 12 when they host Oakland University (1-3) at Jones Natatorium. The meet is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
