Churchill-Smith Finishes Tied for Eighth at Windon Memorial

The EMU men's golf team finished in seventh place with a two-day total of 865
SKOKIE, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – Sophomore Brian Churchill-Smith (Oakville, Ontario, Canada-Oakville Trafalgar) enjoyed the best performance of his young career, finishing at two-over par 212 (67-77-68) to guide the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team to a seventh place finish at the Windon Memorial on the par 70, 6,893-yard Evanston Golf Club course Monday, Oct. 17.
Eastern Michigan shot a 295 to finish with a season-best cumulative total of 865 (275-295-295292-297-284). No. 8 ranked Arkansas stormed through it rounds on the final day to finish in first place with a 847 (274-276-297). No. 22 UCLA and Nov. 43 Indiana (859) tied for second place with a 851 with Nov. 40 Purdue (856) and host Northwestern rounding out the top five.
Matt Thompson of Michigan birdied three of his final five holes to take medalist honors at five-under 205, two shots clear of Northwestern's Eric Chun.
Churchill-Smith's finished the tournament with a two-under 68 during the final round to finish with a 212 in four-way tie for eighth place. The Oakville, Ontario native, shattered his previous career-low for a 54-hole tournament when he carded a 216 at The Firestone Invitational, Oct. 11-12, 2010. The finish was Churchill-Smith's fourth career top-five finish in 14 all-time events.
Junior Casey Olsen (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Oakland University) tied for 16th place with a four-over total of 214 (73-66-75). Olsen's second round score of 66 is tied for the eighth lowest 18-hole mark in program history and he becomes the first Eagles since Zach MacDougal notched the same score at the Georgetown Intercollegiate, Oct. 18, 2010.
Sophomore Jared Dalga (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) turned in a third round 74 to fall into 42th with a 226 (72-73-74), followed closely by senior Derek East (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada-St. Paul's-University of New Orleans) at 226 (67-81-78) in 70th. Freshman Alex Jones (Dewitt, Mich.-Dewitt) posted rounds of 69-79-79 for a two-day total of 227 in 75th.
The tournament marked the last one of the fall for the Eagles. The spring campaign gets under way in February when the squad travels to Dade City, Fla., to compete in the Mid-American Conference Match Play Tournament, Feb. 13-1. Stay tuned to EMUEagles.com for more information.
