Four others post top-five finishes

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) – On the final day of the Penn State National Invitational, the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team once again displayed why they are one of the top up-and-coming teams in the Midwest Region, posting top finishes among 50 schools in competing, 10 of which are nationally-ranked.

Senior mid-distance runner Lauren Quaintance, who was a part of the record-setting distance medley relay team during day one of the invitational, won the 800-meter run one day two by finishing with a time of 2:10.49. Beverly Elcock finished with a time of 2:13 in the 800 Invitational. In the 3,000-meter invitational, Courtney Calka finished fifth with a 9:34.82.

Jessica Hemingway also stood tall against the stellar competition, setting a new standard in the Mid-American Conference this year in the pole vault with a conference-best mark of 13-03.50, good for a first-place victory.

In the 4x400-meter relay, Dejaa Shearer, Naomi Andre, Asia Rawls and Shantavia Williams posted a third place finish of 3:43.91, just over than two behind the winning team from Central Florida.

Freshman Shnell Wishart was stellar in the triple jump, finishing fourth with a jump of 40-07.75, just below her MAC-leading season-best jump. Also the field, Angela Scarber had a weight throw of 42-05.50, finishing 16th in a field of nearly 30 throwers.

In the 400-meter run, Shantavia Williams and Asia Rawls took the second and third spots, finishing with times of 56.06 and 56.09 seconds, respectively. The duo finished behind only Tennessee's Martinique Octave. Dejaa Shearer also ran a 57.47 in the event for a 21st-palce finish.

Rosie White had a top-10 performance (ninth-place) in the 200-meter dash, finishing with a 24.62, while Ashlee Abraham finished 15th with a time of 24.83 in the same event. Cassie Coffman also posted a top-10 finish in the 3,000-meter run.

Other Eagle finishes include Natalie Webb's 12th-place finish and Morgan Churchwell's 17th-place finish in the mile run.

The Eagles will continue in action next week as the team heads to Notre Dame, Ind. for another challenging competition: the famed Meyo Invitational.
