Wrestling Takes Three at 2011 Eastern Duals

The EMU wrestling team defeated Oakland, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Tiffin at Bowen Field House Sat, Jan. 29
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Once again, Eastern Michigan University's wrestling and gymnastics programs teamed up to bring fans an event entitled “Beauty & the Beast” at Bowen Field House, Saturday, Jan. 29. The EMU wrestling team more than made up for a disappointing loss by the gymnasts as they turned in a dominating performance at the 2011 Eastern Duals, defeating Oakland, 48-0, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, 40-9, and Tiffin, 39-6.
It was the second quad meet of the season that the Eagles have swept – the last being the Wendy's Duals hosted by Ashland University in which EMU outscored its opponents by a combined score of 125-9. The Eagles improved their overall dual mark to 11-6 on the season after tallying 16 bonus-point, non-forfeit, victories today.
Jared Germaine, Filiberto Colon and Seth Schaner started the day with three bonus point victories in row against Oakland. Germaine recorded a pin in just 1:18 while Colon and Schaner turned in a major decision and tech. fall, respectively.
For Germaine, it would be his only match of the day as SIU-E and Tiffin would forfeit each of their 125-pound matches. Colon added two pins later in the day including his fastest pin of the season, a 25-second fall to defeat Tiffin's Jordan Duckett. For the fastest pin on the team this year, it was second only to Wes Schroeder's 19-second pin earlier this season. Schroeder enjoyed the day off to rest.
Corey Phillips won each of his two matches on the day at 149-lbs., defeating Oakland with an 11-8 decision and SIU-E with a 13-3 major decision win. Lester France turned in an impressive day at 157-lbs., winning both of his matches by tech. fall by beating Oakland's Tim Streit, 20-4, before shutting out Tiffin's Zack Fiscus, 16-0. In the other 157-pound bout, Aaron Sulzer recorded a, 9-0, major decision win over SIU-E.
J.T. Rice turned in a pair of victories with a 3-0 decision over David Hill of Oakland at 165, and a 6-5 decision against Tiffin's Alex Rivera at 174.
Justin Joseph split two duals at 165. In his first match against SIU-E's Isaac Ervin, Joseph led 8-0 and was seeking a pin against his opponent. However, in an odd occurrence, the junior found himself on his back with no help from his counterpart and the referee was forced to whistle the pin against his favor. This caused both head coaches to approach the referee verifying what had just taken place. Joseph would bounce back with a 6-1 decision win over Tiffin's Johnny Merryman in his final match.
Khodor Hoballah tallied two wins by fall on the day as he conquered Kyle McCullum of Oakland and Deshoun White of SIU-E. Nick Whitenburg also nailed down two victories, the first by forfeit and the other in an overwhelming, 19-2, tech. fall over Robert Cooney of SIU-E.
At heavyweight, Matt Pettigrew turned in a pair of victories with a forfeit win in his first match against Oakland and pin in a minute-flat over Brian Gelter of Tiffin in his second match. David Wade also tallied a victory at heavyweight with a, 4-2, sudden overtime victory over David Devine of SIU-E.
EMU has concluded its regular season non-conference schedule leaving only five matches left against Mid-American Conference opponents before post-season action ensues. The Eagles' next match will be their MAC season opener at Northern Illinois Feb. 4. Action is slated to begin at 7 p.m. CST.
