YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team won a dominant 14 of 16 events to help secure a 180-116 win over Mid-American Conference opponent Miami on senior day this afternoon at Jones Natatorium.
The Eagles improve to 4-3 overall, and remain a perfect 3-0 in MAC competition. The win also makes it 59 consecutive MAC dual-meet victories, a streak that dates back to the 1997-98 season. The RedHawks now drop to 3-4-1 overall (1-2 MAC).
In the opening 200 medley relay, the quartet of Jacob Hanson (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community), Troy Esentan (North Little Rock, Ark.-Central), Justin Griggs (Cheltenham, Australia-Australian Catholic University), and Matt Zavislak (Commerce Twp., Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) raced to a 1:32.20, first place finish for the Green and White. In second was the team of Justin Duong (Saline, Mich.-Saline), Jake Heyblom (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven), Alan Duski (Zagreb, Croatia-Sports), and Dexter Foos (Fremont, Ohio-Fremont-Ross) who swam the event in 1:34.85.
Ricky Linder (Cypress, Texas-Cy-Woods) pushed ahead to secure the top time of 9:39.42 in the 1,000 freestyle, while teammate Gilles Renard (Huy, Belgium-Athenee Royal de Huy) came through in 9:45.55 for third place.
The 200 freestyle featured another EMU victory as Zavislak completed the distance in 1:42.06—good for the fifth quickest time in the MAC. Tom Coates (Melbourne, Austrailia-St. Kevin's College) was the next Eagle to finish in fourth place, touching the wall at the 1:45.79 mark. Zavislak would also take first in the 100 free in 46.32 seconds.
The Eagles would then go on and place 1-2-3 in the 100 backstroke, with Hanson leading the way with a personal season and conference best time of 49.14. Tyler Capen (Lisle, Ill.-Marmion Academy) followed in 51.86, while Duong completed the podium sweep in third with a finish time of 51.99. The trio would also repeat one through three in the 200 back, as Hanson placed first in 1:47.16, Capen in second in 1:53.96, and Duong in third in 1:54.36.
The 100 breaststroke again featured a first through third finish in favor of the Green and White. Esentan led the way with his 57.14, first place performance and was followed by Heyblom and Connor Christie (Saline, Mich.-Saline), who ended in 57.90 and 58.44, respectively. In the 200, Michael Swain (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Huron) notched a victory with his first place time of 2:05.75 in the event.
In the 200 Butterfly, Owen Grey (Allen, Texas-Allen) paced the event in first with his 1:52.39 finish, while in the 100 fly, Griggs took first place in 51.00.
Jeffrey Craig (Kent, Ohio-Field) led the Eagles on the three-meter boards, scoring 367.51 points in the event for a first place finish. On the one meter, Mitch Kellerman (Erlanger, Ky.-St. Henry) took second, tallying 329.33 points, while Craig followed in third with 304.72 points.
The Eagles will return to action on Feb. 5 when they head to Columbus, Ohio to face off against the Buckeyes of Ohio State University. The meet is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
