Men's Swimming and Diving Outlast Musketeers, 129-108

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team topped Xavier University 129-108 this evening at Jones Natatorium.
EMU captured six first place finishes in 13 events on the day to improve to 3-3 on the year, while the Musketeers fall to 1-3.
The Green and White opened the meet with a first place finish in the 200 Medley Relay. The team of Jacob Hanson (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community), Troy Esentan (North Little Rock, Ark.-Central), Justin Griggs (Cheltenham, Australia-Australian Catholic), and Matt Zavislak (Commerce Twp., Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) collaborated for a 1:32.53 finish, representing the third best time for that event in the Mid-American Conference.
Zavislak would later capture a victory of his own in the 50 freestyle when he sprinted to a 21.24 finish, a personal season best time for the junior. Griggs followed in 21.36 for a second place finish for the Eagles.
In the other freestyle events, this weeks MAC Swimmer of the Week, Troy Esentan, placed second in the 100 in 47.38. Gilles Renard (Huy, Belgium-Athenee Royal de Huy) and Michael Swain (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Huron) went 2-3 in the 200, touching the wall in 1:45.55 and 1:46.25, respectively. Ricky Linder (Cypress, Texas-Cy-Woods) was the first to complete the 1,000 freestyle. He swam the distance in 9:46.77 for the eighth fastest time in the conference.
Justin Duong (Saline, Mich.-Saline) notched a win in the 100 backstroke for the Green and White, finishing the event in 52.20, while Hanson would take the 100 butterfly in 51.09. Tom Coates (Melbourne, Austrailia-St. Kevin's College) would be the next to finish for EMU in third with his 52.90 performance.
The Eagles would post NCAA Zone Consideration marks on both the one and three-meter boards. Mitch Kellerman (Erlanger, Ky.-St. Henry) tallied 350.17 points in the one-meter dive en route to his first place finish. Kevin Douglas (Kentwood, Mich.-East Kentwood) took second with 324.37 points, and Jeffrey Craig (Kent, Ohio-Field) scored 271.79 in third place.
On the three-meter, Douglas led the way with 344.32 points for the top spot, with Kellerman following in second (336.15) and Craig rounding out the top-three (271.21).
The Eagles will return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host MAC opponent Miami here at Jones Natatorium. The meet is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
