Jenny Scherer, Sarah Gerber and Jessica Patterson were each honored at the team's annual postseason banquet
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team handed out four postseason awards at its annual awards banquet to celebrate the 2010 season. Three awards were voted on by the players while one was selected by the coaches.
Senior Jenny Scherer took home two pieces of hardware. She was voted on by her peers as winner of the Offensive Player of the Year and Eagle award winner, given to the player that exemplifies leadership on-and-off the field. Scherer led the team in hits (48), home runs (12), doubles (10), RBIs (33) and total bases (96). She was second on the team in batting average (.316) and tied for the longest hitting streak on the team with 11 games at one point in the season.
The native of Stow, Ohio made an immediate impact from the start of her freshman year, finishing her inaugural campaign in green and white with 11 home runs, 37 RBIs and a .315 batting average while helping the Eagles to the program's first MAC West Division and tournament titles. From there, she was consistent throughout her entire career, recording double digit home run in each season while hitting no lower than .312 in her sophomore season. She goes down as the all-time leader in home runs (48) and RBIs (131) while ranking in the top-five in several other offensive categories.
Voted on by the players, this year's Defensive Player of the Year award was handed out to sophomore Sarah Gerber, who appeared in 48 games for the Eagles, starting 41 behind the plate and four at third base. She compiled a .977 fielding percentage, committing just six errors in 260 chances, the most chances by any Eagle this year while playing arguably the two most difficult positions on the diamond.
As voted by Head Coach Karen Baird, Interim Head Coach Eric Oakley and assistants Ashley Strauss, Denis Bausick and last year's winner of the award, Heather Han, the Scholar-Athlete award was given to senior Jessica Patterson. The native of Ionia, Mich., Patterson turned in a career-high .319 average after switching to the left side mid-way through her college career. She graduates with a biology degree after registering an impressive 3.20 GPA in the field. Her defense was also exceptional this year as she made just one error all season in 44 starts in the outfield.
The Eagles ended the season with a 19-30-1 overall record with an 8-13-1 conference mark.
