Injuries riddle banged up EMU

TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team was unable to overcome the injury bug, which has been biting the squad all season, as the Eagles fell, 4-3, to the Rockets of the University of Toledo.

After earning the doubles point with two 9-7 victories, EMU gave up four singles matches to the home Rockets to lose the match. Freshman Julia Breuss, who normally plays in the number one position for the Eagles, was unable to play today due to an injury, and other Eagles managed to play through injury in the loss.

Karina Ahuja, who played Toledo's Ashley Frey close for most of her set, was forced to retire due to an injury late in the first set of their match. Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr and Marcela Rivero earned two decisive victories in the four and five spots, respectively, as each only surrendered one point in the first set and de'Lisle-Tarr closed her second set with another 6-1 win. Rivero closed her match with a 6-4 set win.

"Having our number one out of the lineup and two others playing through injuries put us in a tough spot to start," said EMU Head Coach Ryan Ray. "However, I'm proud of the effort we gave in this match to almost get the win. So far, we have lost 4-3 to the third and fourth place teams, so if we can get healthy by the time we go to the Mid-American Conference tournament, we hope to make a good run."

The Eagles look to bounce back from the loss next week, April 23 and 24, as the team hosts Miami Friday and Ball State Saturday at the Chippewa Racquet Club in Ypsilanti, Mich. Both matches will get underway at 1 p.m.
