2010 MAC Men's Swimming & Diving Championships Underway

First session prelims featured the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free as the Eagles advanced eight to the finals this evening

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – In the first session of the 2010 Mid-American Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, the Eagles sent eight swimmers to finals this evening, which will begin at 7 p.m. at Michael H. Jones Natatorium in Ypsilanti, Mich.
In the 500 free, Troy Esentan and David Stefl each qualified for tonight's championship final. Esentan's time of 4:29.85 was the second-fastest time in prelims behind Alex Reinhardt of Miami who touched the wall in a prelim-best and Division I-B qualifying time of 4:27.70. Stefl swam a time of 4:32.46, good for seventh in prelims while Gilles Renard and Keith Coghlan each turned in times to compete in the consolation final tonight.
The day's second prelim event was the 200 IM in which freshman Jacob Hanson recorded the top time of 1:49.45, just 12-hundredths of a second shy of the Division I-B qualifying time. Hanson, as well as, Matt Lifka and Tyler Capen of EMU, each qualified for the evening's championships final. Lifka turned in a time of 1:51.33, good for the fourth seed in the tonight's race, while Capen touched the wall with the sixth-fastest time in the event with a mark of 1:52.37.
And in the final swimming prelim event of day one, the 50 free, EMU's Justin Griggs turned in the fastest time of 20.21, a Division I-B qualifying mark. Matt Zavislak finished just outside the group that qualified for the consolation final, turning a time of 21.23, good for 17th place.
The finals will begin at 7 p.m. at the Michael H. Jones Natatorium on the campus of Eastern Michigan University.
