YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team began its 2010 home schedule on a sour note Friday evening, Jan. 15, at the Convocation Center, with a 19-13 setback to Clarion University. The Eagles are now winless in their last three matches with the Golden Eagles (0-2-1) dating back to the 2007-08 season.
The Eagles fall to 6-5-1 while the Golden Eagles improve to 3-5.
Action began with the 197 lbs. match, where senior Josh Lewis (West Liberty, Ohio-Salem) squared-off against Alex Thomas. Tied at four after two periods, Thomas took a 6-4 lead with a takedown. Lewis answered with an escape to pull back to within one. It would not be enough, however, as Thomas prevailed, 7-5, with an extra point for riding time. Clarion took the early 3-0 lead.
Looking to rebound, junior David Wade (Beavercreek, Ohio-Beavercreek) stepped onto the mat with Quintas McCorkle in the heavyweight bout. McCorkle took a 2-1 lead into the second period, but Wade pulled even with an escape. In the last period, McCorkle put the pressure on Wade with an escape to go ahead by one. Wade was unable to solve his opponent as McCorkle prevailed, 5-2, to give Clarion a 6-0 lead.
At 125 lbs., Chris Jenkins (Tecumseh, Mich.-Tecumseh) came out ready to battle against Trey Hicks, as the senior jumped out to a 10-0 lead after one period thanks to a takedown followed by eight consecutive near-fall points. Hicks was able to hold Jenkins to just one point plus riding time for the remainder of the match, but the damage was done as Jenkins won by major decision, 12-0, allowing EMU to cut its deficit to 6-4.
Senior Sean Clair (Turtlecreek, Pa.-Plum) then battled Jay Ivanco at 133 lbs. Neither grappler was able to gain an advantage until the 1:44 mark of the middle frame, when Ivanco escaped for a 1-0 lead. Clair would take his first lead of the contest early in the third period with a reversal to make it 2-1. He tacked on more than a minute of riding time in the final frame to win the match, 3-1, and give EMU a 7-6 edge.
Greg Lewis looked to halt the EMU momentum at 149 lbs. as he took on sophomore Corey Phillips (Canton, Mich.-Canton). After falling behind, 2-0, Phillips was awarded a penalty point and notched an escape to tie the score midway through the first period. Phillips was unable to keep up with Clarion counterpart, however, as Lewis tallied nine additional points plus riding time for a 12-4 major decision. The Golden Eagles went back on top, 10-7.
Senior David Pienaar (Trafford, Pa.-Greensburg Catholic Central) opened the 149 lbs. bout with a first period takedown of James Fleming for a 2-0 lead. Fleming answered with an escape followed by a pair of three point near-falls to race ahead, 7-2. Pienaar could not find a way to get himself back into the match, as Fleming prevailed, 9-2, to put a 13-7 stranglehold on the dual for Clarion.
In desperate need of a victory, freshman Aaron Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio-Holy Name) took to the mat to face No. 20 ranked Hadley Harrison at 157 lbs. Trailing 2-0 after two minutes, Sulzer halved the deficit with an escape. The score remained 2-1 well into the third period when a Harrison takedown extended his lead to 4-1. Despite a late escape by Sulzer, it was Harrison who claimed a 4-2 victory. Clarion went ahead, 16-7, with three matches remaining.
Riding a three match winning streak, CU's Nick Milano took on senior Justin Brandel (Saginaw, Mich.-Swan Valley) at 165 lbs. After a scoreless first period, an escape by Brandel gave him the 1-0 lead early in the second. Both wrestlers were stalemated for the remainder of the middle frame, but Milano wasted little time in the third period as he followed up a reversal with a takedown for a 4-1 lead.
In the closing seconds, Brandel recorded an escape and a penalty point to make the score 4-3. However, Milano was able to stave-off Brandel and escaped with Clarion's fourth consecutive win. CU was now in complete control of the dual, 19-7.
At 174 lbs., junior Nick Hendrick (Columbiaville, Mich.-Powers Catholic) got off to an early 2-1 lead over Steven Cressley with a takedown. Tied 2-2 in the third frame, Hendrick went ahead, 3-2, with an escape. Hendrick followed that up with a crucial takedown plus a bonus point to claim a 6-2 victory. The Eagles were now down nine, 19-10.
The final match of the evening featured “true” freshman Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East) and Clint Podish at 184 lbs. Joseph scored a pair of early takedowns for a 4-1 lead after one period. With Joseph ahead 6-1, Podish rallied to make the score 6-5 late in the second. Before the period reached its conclusion, Joseph notched a reversal to take an 8-5 lead. Joseph stayed tough through the final two minutes to close-out Podish, 11-6. EMU received three team points but fell short overall, 19-13.
EMU will now head to East Lansing, Mich. for the Spartan Duals Saturday, Jan. 16, where it will face Rutgers University, the University of Findlay and Stanford University beginning at 11 a.m.
