Freshman earns first weekly conference accolade of her career
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University freshman golfer Emily Podzielinski (Noblesville, Ind.-Noblesville) was named Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Week for the period ending Sept. 20, 2009. This marks the first time in her career she has collected the weekly award.
Podzielinski made it a clean sweep for EMU, when she captured medalist honors with a three-under 141 (72-69) for the two-round Cardinal Classic, Sept. 19-20, at The Players Club in Yorktown, Ind.. Podzielinski's victory was the first of her career in just her second collegiate event and her total of 141 becomes the new 36-hole EMU standard passing Stephany Fleet's mark of 143 (69-74) accomplished at the NIU Brickyard Intercollegiate, Sept. 10-11, 2007.
As a team, the Eagles captured the tournament title with a 591 (298-293). BSU finished seven stokes back at 598 (293-305) followed by Grand Valley State University in third with a 599 (301-298). The team total of 591 was the lowest 36-hole score in school-history, surpassing the standard of 600 (299-301) set at the NIU Brickyard Intercollegiate, Sept. 10-11, 2007. The final round team total of 293 is also tied for the third lowest single-round in school-history. Additionally, the team victory marks the 14th overall title in the program's 16-year history and the 10th during head coach Sandy Wagner's five-year tenure as head coach.
Eastern Michigan takes a week off before traveling to the Nittany Lion Invitational, Oct. 3-4, in University Park, Pa.
