CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Eastern Michigan University softball team had a pair of players selected to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference team, as announced by the conference office. Senior Heather Han (Lafayette, Ind.-McCutcheon) earned the distinction for the first time in her career, while junior Jenny Scherer (Stow, Ohio-Stow-Munroe) was honored for the second consecutive year.
Han, a starter in 50 games, hit .302 with 15 extra-base knocks, including five home runs. She knocked in 19 runs to go along with a .477 slugging percentage. She was selected MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week (April 16) after helping the Eagles sweep Central Michigan for the first time in school history. The senior catcher hit a three-run home run against the Chippewas (April 11) to give the Eagles the victory. Han, 3.61 GPA, will graduate in December with a degree in elementary education.
Scherer is named to the squad for the second consecutive season after hitting .318 with 14 multi-hit games. The junior centerfielder led the MAC in home runs (14), RBI (41) and total bases (101). In addition, she was also third in the conference in both runs scored (33) and doubles (12). Her 14 home runs set a new EMU single-season record and pushed her career record to 36, also tops in EMU history. Scherer, an accounting major, carries a 3.60 GPA.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments from the current season only are considered. Due to ties in the voting the squad was expanded to 18 this year. The number of honorees on the Academic All-MAC Team is set for the specific sport or 33 percent of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.
