Eagles Soar Past Cougars, Fall to Hoosiers at F.I.T.E. Duals

Phillip Joseph stays perfect in dual matches with 2-0 record Saturday
OAK LAWN, Ill. (EMUEAGLES.com)—The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team split a pair of dual matches here Saturday, Dec. 12, at the F.I.T.E. Duals. The Eagles fell in the opening bout, 29-6, against No. 13 ranked Indiana University, but rebounded with a 37-6 victory over the University of Southern Illinois at Edwardsville.
True freshman Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East) led the way for the Eagles with a perfect 2-0 record on the day. Senior David Pienaar (Trafford, Pa.-Greensburg Catholic Central) also recorded a victory in his first regular season dual against SIU.
The Eagles are now 3-3-1 on the season, while Indiana improves to 8-0 and Southern Illinois falls to 0-6.
EMU first squared off against the Hoosiers, where sophomore Andrew Novak (New Boston, Mich.-Huron) got the Eagles on the board with a 12-6 decision over Matt Ortega at 133 lbs. The only other EMU victory would come from Joseph, who won an 8-2 decision against Eric Cameron. Indiana claimed the remaining eight matches en route to a 29-6 victory.
Following a frustrating first bout, the Eagles poured it on against SIU, winning eight of ten matches. Senior Chris Jenkins (Tecumseh, Mich.-Tecumseh) was the first of three eagles to record technical falls in the bout with an 18-0 shutout of Kris Treat at 125 lbs.
After a loss at 133 lbs., the Green and White won the following six bouts, which included a 5-4 decision by sophomore Frank Sade (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Norway) (141 lbs.), a 13-5 major decision by Pienaar (149 lbs.), a pair of technical falls by freshman Aaron Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio-Holy Name) (157 lbs.) and senior Justin Brandel (Saginaw, Mich.-Swan Valley) (165 lbs.), and consecutive falls by junior Nick Hendrick (Coulmbiaville, Mich.-Powers Catholic) (174 lbs.) and Joseph (184 lbs.).
SIU ended the Eagles' winning streak with a decision at 197 lbs., but junior David Wade (Beavercreek, Ohio-Beavercreek) finished the day on a winning note with a 9-3 decision of his own to give EMU a decisive 37-6 victory over the Cougars.
The Eagles will be back in action Sunday, Dec. 13, when they compete at the Cleveland State Open in Cleveland, Ohio.
