Ashley Rodrigues, Katie Lozar and Katie Marsh earn 2009 All-Great Lakes Region honors
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Three members of the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team were named to the 2009 NSCAA All-Great Lakes Region team. Ashley Rodrigues, Katie Lozar and Katie Marsh represented the Eagles after helping the team to an 11-4-6 record and a third straight Mid-American Conference Tournament appearance.
Rodrigues headlined the trio, garnering first team honors after scoring a career- and league-high 10 goals and 21 points in 2009. This prestigious honor just adds to the senior's decorated career as she was named 2009 MAC Offensive Player of the Year and selected to the All-MAC first team for the second time in her career.
The native of Pickering, Ontario netted six game-winning goals and capped her career off by climbing the EMU charts and finishing in the top-three in goals (21), points (53), shots on goal (71) and game-winning goals (9).
Another senior, Lozar, was a second team NSCAA All-Great Lakes Region selection after anchoring a midfield that helped the Eagles to a second place MAC finish with a conference record of 6-1-4. The Broadview Heights, Ohio native was also named to her second straight All-MAC first team in 2009. She started every game for the Eagles, scoring a goal and an assist and providing the defense up the middle needed to help shutout 10 opponents this season.
Leading the backline for the EMU defense in 2009 was Marsh. The sophomore was named third team All-Great Lakes Region. This honor comes at the heels of her first All-MAC selection as she was named to the second team. The Dexter, Mich. native scored a goal while tallying 15 shots for the Eagles this year. She was a key component in the Eagles' impressive shutout streak of 379 minutes which spanned over four matches resulting in three consecutive shutouts from Sept. 8-18.
EMU defender, Katie Zundel, was the first Eagle to be voted All-Region since 2004 when she earned third team honors a season ago. This is the first time the Eagles have put three players on an All-Great Lakes squad and the first time since 1999 that a player has earned first team accolades when Sarah Willis and Tracy Deeter collected the honor.
