EMU Heads to the State of Missouri for Four-Game Swing

EASTERN MICHIGAN IN HISPANIC COLLEGE FUND CLASSIC: The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team will head to the state of Missouri for a four-game swing from Nov. 20 to Nov. 24. The Eagles are scheduled to participate in the Hispanic Fund Classic Friday-Sunday, Nov. 20-22, at JQH Arena (11,000) in Springfield, Mo. The Eagles open the classic on Friday, Nov. 20, at 5:30 p.m. against The Citadel. Saturday, Nov. 21, Eastern takes on Maryland-Eastern Shore at 5:30 and Sunday, Nov. 22, the Eagles take on host Missouri State at 8 p.m. After the three-game classic, the Eagles move on to Cape Giradeau, Mo. for a Tuesday, Nov. 24, game against Southeast Missouri State University at 7 p.m.
HFC FIELD: Eastern Michigan enters the Hispanic Fund Classic with a 1-0 record after recording an 81-77 non-conference win at Oakland University Saturday, Nov. 14.
The Citadel opened the season with a 64-45 win over Kenyon College, Nov. 13, and are scheduled to host Charleston Southern, Nov. 17. The Citadel Head Coach Ed Conroy (The Citadel, '89) is in his fourth year and has a 34-60 record. Now in his seven year as a head coach, Conroy has a 75-100 mark for the Bulldogs.
Maryland-Eastern Shore dropped its 2009-10 season opener to Stoneybrook, 75-57, Nov. 13. UMES is slated to play at Marquette, Nov. 17. The Fighting Hawks are led by Head Coach Frankie Allen (Roanoke, '71) who is in his second year and has a 7-24 record. Allen is 230-318 in 21 years as a head coach. During the 1993-94 season EMU Head Coach Charles E. Ramsey was an assistant under Allen when he served as the head coach at Tennessee State University.
Host Missouri State is scheduled to open the season Monday, Nov, 16, at home against Auburn. The Bears are coached by former Purdue Unversity standout Cuonzo Martin (Purdue, '00) who had a 11-20 record in his first year as a head coach in 2008-09.
BOWDRY EARNS MAC AWARD: EMU redshirt junior forward Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) opened the 2009-10 season with a huge effort, recording the eighth double-double of his 65-game career with 26 points and 13 rebounds in an 81-77 non-conference road win at Oakland, Nov. 14. For his efforts, Bowdry was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 15. Bowdry made 9-of-14 field goals, 1-of-1 three-point attempts, 7-of-11 free throws for 26 points while hauling down 13 rebounds and adding one assist and one steal in 36 minutes of action. The MAC weekly award was Bowdry's third. He also won the award, Jan. 13, and March 9, in 2009.
CHECKING THE SERIES: In the Hispanic Fund Classic the Eagles will be meeting two of their three opponents for the first time in history. EMU has an 0-1 record against Maryland-Eastern Shore, dropping a 65-61 decision Nov. 26, 2001. EMU and The Citadel and EMU and Missouri State have never played.
BIG OPENING WIN: EMU's opening-game win at Oakland Saturday, Nov. 14, came against a Golden Grizzlie team that was picked to win the Summit League in the preseason poll. The win also gives the Eagles an 8-4 advantage in the series.
EIGHTH TWINBILL FOR BOWDRY: Brandon Bowdry's (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) 26-point, 13-rebound double-double in the season opener at Oakland, Nov. 14, was the eighth of his career.
NATIONAL TV PEEK: EMU will have two nationally televised games in the 2009-10 season. The EMU at Ohio State game, set for Saturday, Dec. 5, at noon in Columbus, Ohio, and the EMU at Miami game, scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 30, at noon, will both be shown nationally on ESPNU. In addition, the EMU at Akron game, slated for Monday, Feb. 1, will be televised by Fox Sports Net.
COACHING CONNECTIONS: EMU Head Coach Charles E. Ramsey is one of seven head coaches with Eastern Michigan University ties currently coaching in the NCAA Division I ranks. Ramsey, a 1992 EMU graduate and former EMU assistant, joins fellow EMU graduate Stan Heath (South Florida), along with former EMU coaches Ben Braun (Rice), Keith Dambrot (Akron), Gary Waters (Cleveland State), Todd Lickliter (Iowa) and Tony Harvey (Texas Southern) as head coaches. Heath played for Eastern from 1985-87. Braun is EMU's winningest head coach after coaching from 1986-1996. Dambrot was a member of Braun's staff from 1986-89 and Waters was a Braun assistant from 1989-95. Lickliter spent two years as an EMU assistant coach, from 1997-99, and Harvey was an EMU assistant coach from 1996-99.
EAGLES PICKED THIRD IN MAC WEST: The 2009-10 EMU men's basketball team was selected to finish third in the Mid-American Conference West Division by the MAC NewsMedia Association. Central Michigan was chosen to win the West with Northern Illinois second, EMU third, Ball State fourth, Western Michigan fifth and Toledo sixth. The East Division favorite is Akron followed by Kent State, Buffalo, Miami, Bowling Green and Ohio.
