Complete Release (.pdf)
BUSY WEEKEND IN STORE: The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team will kick-off dual competition Saturday, Nov. 14, when it takes on Northern Iowa University and St. Cloud State University at the annual Northwestern Duals in Evanston, Ill.
The trip to Evanston will be followed up by a visit to East Lansing, Mich. for the Michigan State Open Sunday, Nov. 15. Last season, the Green and White sent 22 grapplers to the event. David Wade was the top EMU performer with a 3-2 record and a fifth place finish in the heavyweight division.
TEN EAGLES PLACE AT EMU OPEN: The 2009-10 season officially got underway Saturday, Nov. 7, at the 18th Annual EMU Open. The Eagles were well represented at the event as 10 EMU grapplers took home fifth place finishes or better.
Senior David Wade and freshman Nick Whitenburg both notched runner-up honors at the event, with Wade taking second place in the heavyweight class of the open division. Whitenburg placed second at 184 lbs. in the freshman and sophomore division and posted a 3-1 record in his collegiate debut.
Senior Chris Jenkins, sophomore Andrew Novak and freshman Mike LeHolm each earned third place in their respective divisions. LeHolm bounced back after an opening round setback to win six straight matches in his first competition as an Eagle.
THE SAME BUT TOTALLY DIFFERENT: EMU's lineup at the Northwestern Duals will completely consist of wrestlers who appeared on last season's roster at some point. Although the faces might be familiar, the attitude is anything but. Head Coach Derek DelPorto has spent the offseason preaching one guiding principle: confidence.
“These guys are finally realizing that Eastern Michigan Wrestling is here to stay,” said DelPorto. “We demand confidence in our road to becoming one of the Nation's top 25 Division I wrestling schools.”
SPEAKING OF WHICH...: Confidence is great, especially when there is a great deal of talent to go with it. In the case of seniors Chris Jenkins and David Wade, there is no shortage of either element. Jenkins, who gets the start at 125 lbs. Saturday, is coming off a 4-1 effort at the EMU Open where he knocked-off two nationally-ranked opponents. Wade will anchor the heavyweight division after a 3-1 performance at the Open.
“It was good to see a slimmer, more mobile David Wade make it to the finals,” said DelPorto. “He and I were both disappointed in his finals performance (Wade lost in overtime), but we were happy about the good start.”
ROOKIE RUMBLE AT MSU: Three newcomers to the team, freshmen Jared Germaine (125 lbs.), Greg Gogonas (133 lbs.) and Seth Schaner (141) will step onto the mat for their first matches as college athletes at Sunday's MSU Open. They will be competing alongside the rest of the EMU squad at the annual event.
