YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
Coming off a solid performance at the Notre Dame Invitational, the Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team will make the trek to Grand Rapids, Mich. Friday, Oct. 9, for the Michigan Intercollegiate. The 8,000-meter race is scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m. at the Gainey Athletic Complex.

Last week at the 54th running of the Notre Dame Invitational, the Eagles finished third in the gold division with 93 points. The Eagles finished behind runner-up Grand Valley State University (52 points) and North Central College (46 points).

Senior captain Curtis Vollmar (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) had the second best time in his division, finishing second with a time of 24:40. Vollmar has placed in the top five in every one of EMU's races in 2009. Overall, Vollmar's time was the 47th best of the afternoon. Jacob Kirwa of New Mexico had the best overall time of the day, as he claimed the blue division title with a time of 23:44.

True freshman Terefe Ejigu (Mount Cook, Wellington-Wellington-New Zealand) performed well in his EMU debut, as he finished 34th overall with a time of 25:39.

Finishing ahead of Ejigu was senior captain R.P. White (Hillsdale, Mich.-Hillsdale) who rounded out the top-10 with a time of 25:12. Junior Matt Hammersmith (Wolcottville, Mich.-Prairie Heights) had a solid race of his own, taking 12th at the Notre Dame Invite gold division with a time of 25:17.

At last year's Michigan Intercollegiate Championship in Milford, Mich., it was White who paced the Eagles to a runner-up finish as a team, as he was the first Eagle harrier to cross the finish line, taking sixth with a time of 25:57. The only other Eagles to finish in the top-20 were Cole Sanseverino (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe) and Hammersmith, who finished 12th and 19th, respectively.

After competing in the Michigan Intercollegiate, the Eagles make the short trek to Bowling Green, Ohio for the Falcon Invitational, Oct. 17, at 10 a.m.
