YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University Athletics celebrates the start of its 2009-10 men's and women's basketball season Friday, Oct. 16, with “Thriller of Madness,” a free event with a special showcase tribute to Michael Jackson.
“It has been over a decade since EMU last kicked off the basketball season like this and we're going to have a little fun with it this year,” said Dr. Derrick Gragg, EMU Athletic Director. “As a part of “Thriller of Madness,” players will be introduced to their favorite Michael Jackson music and fans are invited to cheer on the team and participate in a variety of contests with the potential to win some great prizes.”
The event is free and doors open at 9 p.m. at the EMU Convocation Center. Fans can pick up free team posters while collecting autographs and taking pictures with their favorite players. EMU will also offer a behind the scenes tour of the Convocation Center, including a walk-through of the men's and women's locker rooms.
Fans are also invited to participate in the Eagle Nation 3-point Challenge. Preliminary rounds will be held in the auxiliary gym where fans will compete against each other for the top two spots in the men's and women's divisions. The top shooters from each division will compete against each other during the main event with the winners advancing to face a member of the EMU men's and women's basketball teams.
As a special treat, a Michael Jackson look-a-like/dance contest will be held during the event. Participants are encouraged to dress and act the part. The best Michael Jackson routine will win a suite to a men's and women's basketball game and tickets to the upcoming Michael Jackson movie. Registration is available on a first come, first served basis and space is limited to the first eight groups.
The night will conclude with two short scrimmages offering a first-hand look at the 2009 men's and women's basketball teams.
