EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – A busy weekend of competition for the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team concluded in grand fashion for unattached freshmen Mike LeHolm (Jackson, Mich.-Jackson Northwest) and Nick Whitenburg (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford), who each took home first place finishes Sunday, Nov. 15, at the Michigan State Open.

LeHolm earned a perfect 5-0 record on the day, which included a tech fall and four decisions at 141 lbs. of the freshman and sophomore division. In the finals, LeHolm took down Nick Lafevre from the Citadel, 5-3. The true freshman extened his record to 11-1 in unattached bouts this season.

Whitenburg needed just three vicories to earn the top spot at 184 lbs. of the freshman sophomore division. Following a tech fall and a decision in the first two rounds, the true freshman claimed vicotry in the finals with a convincing pin of Allgean's John Rizqallah at the 4:42 mark. Whitenburg is now 6-1 on the season.

Both LeHolm and Whitenburg have earned top-three finishes at each of the two events in which they have participated this season. Whitenburg took second place at last week's EMU Open, while LeHolm placed third.

Other placewinners at the MSU Open included freshmen Jared Germaine (Saginaw, Mich.-Saginaw Valley), senior Sean Clair (Turtlecreek, Pa.-Plum), sophomore Chris Eggert (Dundee, Mich.-Dundee), freshmen Khodor Hobollah (Dearborn, Mich.-Dearborn), Seth Schaner (Big Rapids, Mich.-Big Rapids), Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East), and sophomore Wes Schroeder (Manitou Beach, Mich.-Addison).

In the first event of his collegiate career, Germaine won five consecutive matches after an opening round setback at 125 lbs. of the freshman and sophomore division. The true freshman recorded three decisions, a major decision and a pin. He finished in fourth place after being pinned by Indiana University's Justin Brooks at the 4:45 mark of the third place bout.

Clair managed a 4-2 record on the day which included a trio of decisions to take fifth place at 133 lbs. of the open division. Eggert also placed fifth at 174 lbs. of the freshman and sophomore division with a 3-2 record.

Hobollah (174 lbs.), and Schaner (141 lbs.) both took home sixth place honors in their respective weight classes in the freshman and sophomore division, while Joseph (174 lbs.) and Schroeder (heavyweight) grappled their ways to sixth place finishes in the open division.

The Eagles will be back in action Thursday, Nov. 19, when they travel to Cleveland, Ohio for a matchup with the Vikings of Cleveland State University. Action is slated for 7 p.m.
