The EMU dance team performs at all home football games, men's and women's home basketball games, women's home volleyball games, and some soccer games as well. You can catch them on the sidelines, or for a halftime or pre-game performance at most games.

Our team fundraises for most things for the season, such as uniforms, shoes, bags, shirts, poms, warm-ups, competitions, and trips. We hold car washes in the summer, travel to Jackson for the Michigan International Speedway events to participate in concession fundraising, help at the Convocation Center with various fundraisers, host annual dance clinics for kids, and more.

Now here is your chance to attend games, poster signings and other events, have your business logo advertised in a variety of EMU locations, by becoming an official dance team sponsor. Please contact the coach for information.

Along with most sporting events, the dance team performs at special events such as parades, pep rallies, dance competitions, grand openings, and more. Contact Coach Tricia Crawford at

Dance Team Frequently Asked Questions

The EMU Dance Team is a performance team that appears at many athletic and campus functions. We are looking for spirited and talented young women that will represent our University in a positive and respectful manner. Here are some frequently asked questions:

Q: What skills do you look at during tryouts?
A: We ask to see: double and or triple pirouettes, grand jete’ leaps, calypso leap, second position or open leaps, and fouette`s.  We do also like to see basic pom technique.

Q: If I am unable to do all the skills, will I be cut right away?
A: No, if you are unable to perform any of the skills during the try-out the judges will take your potential into account.

Q: Do I have to choreograph something for tryouts?
A: No, you do not have to choreograph anything for the tryout.  All choreography will be taught at the audition.  You may however be asked to do a free style at some point.

Q: How often do you practice during the season?
A: We begin practicing over the summer, typically the middle of July, in order to prepare for football season. During the school year, we practice 2 days a week, most likely Sunday and Wednesday evenings, for about 3 hours at a time.

Q: When does the team perform?
A: During Football season we have a full squad on the sidelines and perform one timeout routine at every home football game.  We also send a partial squad to all away football games.  We have a partial squad at all home Women’s Volleyball and Basketball games, where they perform sidelines and 1 routine.  And the team dances a full squad at all home Men’s Basketball games, performing sidelines and 2 timeout routines.

Q: What style of dancing does the team do?
A: We are a diverse team that tries to incorporate many styles of dance. However, we do focus on hip-hop and jazz for our performances.

Cheer Team Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When are try-outs?
A: Try-outs are held at the end of April for the upcoming season. Check the website frequently for exact dates.

Q: What are the requirements?
A: We are looking for talented individuals that will represent our team and university in a positive manner.

Q: How many freshmen do you take?
A: There is no limit to the number of freshman we allow on the squad.

Q: Do you have a Varsity and Junior Varsity squad?
A: No we do not have a separation of Varsity and Junior Varsity. Everyone cheers football season. The team is broken into groups for volleyball matches, the team is also broken into groups for basketball games during the weekdays and we cheer a full squad for games on the weekend.

Q: Do you have an all girl squad?
A: At this time we do not have an all girl squad, but we may offer one in the future. Keep looking on the website for new information.

Q: How much of a time commitment should I expect?
A: We generally practice three times week for 2-3 hours. There are football games, volleyball games, pep rallies, luncheons, parades and alumni functions that we attend. Depending on the talent and team we may go to Nationals in Walt Disney World, which require extra practices. Cheerleading is a large time commitment. It is extremely difficult for those that intend to have a part time job or become part of a fraternity or sorority. Cheerleading is expected to come before all extra activities including work.
